And need some help. I was able to download the (4 page) owners manual from the Hi-point web site. It is not very helpfull, can someone point me to some good directions on tearind down the 995 for basic cleaning? How about stock removal (I would like to paint it)? Who has the best prices on spare mags? Any additional help would be greatfully appreciated.

Thanks,

Dan

Another MD'er....welcome aboard. Be sure to check out this thread for some info on MD happenings.

I picked up a carbine last year sometime....neat little gun.

Cleaning a Hi-Point? What's that? :neener: I wouldn't be too concerned about keeping it clean as it's a real PITA and it's not that crucial to the gun's function.

Basically you have to unbolt all of the hex bolts on the cover and the manual is pretty good after that. Just watch out for the little clippy thing on the bottom of the bolt/breech assembly.

From what I understand it's like taking a nylon 66 apart. DON'T DO IT!! Lots of fiddly litty parts in there.

Put a swab down the barrel and whipe out the breech with a patch. Nothing more needed to keep it operating.

+100 to that...I've got over 5000 rounds through mineand I've never disasembled it...And I've shot alot of "dirty" Wold ammo through it..

Takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin'

Thanks

I'll shoot it for awhile first. Still want to remove the stock eventualy to change the color and remove some of the casting flash.

A little update...

The 995 came without the rear sight and had a weaver rail installed in the rear position. So I bought a "Bass Pro" Red Dot and installed it on the rail, it fits nice and I like the location. The Red Dot (and lack of rear sight) makes the front sight useless. I went to remove the front sight and found that it is required to hold the barrel shround in place... bummer. Has anyone come across something (flash suppressor :D ) that will replace the front sight mount and still capture the shroud? It looks like a fairly simple part to fabricate, but I do not have the machinery required.

Thanks for any help,

Dan

Well, if you're convinced that your going to keep the red dot, you could just Dremel off the front sight

Update part two...

I found a site that advertizes a Hi-Point Assembly/Disassembly manual with step by step pictures. Check this place out...
http://www.rayrilingarmsbooks.com

Seems like VERY simple manuals but we will see, I've ordered one. Has anyone else tried these manuals?

Thanks for the update on "melting" the stock. I guess that was one of my original concerns when I posted. I would be nice to remove the stock while cleaning (AKA "hosing out") the action... even if the action is not disassembled.

Norton- My first thought on the front sight was to take a hacksaw and file to it! Then I started picturing a flash suppresor in it's place. I'm surprised that with so many 995's out there that there is not some after market attachments available. These small carbines just beg for add-ons!

Thanks again to all and I'll post comments on the manual from above.

-Dan

Edit- to fix link... I hope.

Go ahead and melt the stock, Hi-Point will replace it. Lifetime warranty. A guy on another forum tried modding the stock and killed it by cutting it all apart, they gave him a new one. They have the best warranty in the business IMHO, along with Kel-Tec.

The gun is rediculously easy to tear down completely.
The instructs Hi-Point gives are very clear, take out the bolts! The whole thing just unscrews, including the stock. Don't be afraid of it...

And PLEASE don't spend money on manuals!!! :banghead:
Its a very SIMPLE proceedure, just try it once!
I'm dead serious... the Hi-Point carbine manual is quite good.

And, unlike most other companies, if you get stuck, call them up (yeah! they answer the phones!!) and they'll happily walk you through whatever issue you're having, even field stripping. I'm not kidding.

They DO have compensators and lasers and red-dots and all manner of accessories.
Give em a call or go to their website www.mkssupply.com/

I love enthusiasm!

gonzo,

Thanks for the encouragement. I already ordered the manual.

I will remove the stock at some point to paint it and hose down the reciever and workings.

Take down is very easy. There's 2 bolts on the action shroud, one hex bolt at the front and a big clip underneath where the SN is. The rest of the bolts and clips hold the two halves together.

As for the front sight, mine came with a scope mounted and had all of the gear for a standard sight. The front sight is a 2-piece and, after removing the top piece, does not interfere with the scope.

BTW, dfaugh, did the firing pin bend on you too, or was it just mine?

Sorry Berek, I did not describe what I wanted to do very well. The bolt I want to remove is the actual bolt to the gun that feeds the round into the chamber, holds the pressure of the firing round, etc.

As you look at the action, there's a "post" behind it right behinds the mag well. That post has a small clip that needs to be removed (slid back, away from the action). Slide the action back a little and the whole thing lifts up. Then slide it forward (the front sight post needs to be removed). Be careful as the spring and FP may come sliding out.

The attachment is the unnderside showing the clip.
