It was a profound feeling walking up the steps of an old courthouse to get my CPL in Michigan yesterday. A year ago I owned no weapons, and now I'm prepared to defend my life and property and the lives of my family. I hope I never need to use a weapon for anything other than shooting at the range ... which I love to do ... but I have found an awakened love of shooting and of intricate, powerful and dangerous tools.

I carried for the first time in my car last night, and there was something completely new in the way that I thought about the world and my place in it: A heightened awareness, a greatly increased sense of responsibility to act in a careful way, and an attention to the details of life.

Still working on my decisions on what to carry on my person, and how to do it. Can't carry at work, but I want to have something with me for the commute. I want to learn how to carry unobtrusively, and with a weapon on which I've trained and am ready and able to use.

Remember the scene in The Godfather when Vito is shot? I don't ever want to be Fredo.

Thanks for the time everyone has spent sharing experiences and opinions. This seems to me to be a group of men and women who are level-headed, aware, and thoughtful, eager to learn and ready to help.

I'll post from time to time as experience warrants it.

You're doing a great job preparing, but I wouldn't say anyone is ever completely prepared. Take as many training courses as you're able to, they'll help immensely. That feeling you have now x10 when you successfully complete a good quality training course.

*edit to add: Welcome to the forum, also!

Welcome to the community

Congratulations on the CPL ! If you ever find yourself near Kent county message me - we'll go to the range. If you still need to choose a sidearm there is a nice range that rents a wide variety of pistols at $10 with 10 rounds. I found the $10 deal a great way to try a selection of pistols without breaking the bank. (silver bullet firearms)

Congrats!
I got mine just a few months ago, and I remember the feeling walking out of the courthouse with my CPL. I felt like a new man.

Thanks ... good advice from all

Thanks to all for the replies and advice.

AFS: Will do the Wally walk soon (good one; I smiled at that vision).
RailDriver: I hear you. Upon re-reading my post, it sounded a little naive. Guess I meant I'm prepared to begin the journey toward that goal, and I'm def. planning on classes twice a year for growth.
Standing Wold, RevDerb: Powerful comments in very few words. Thanks.
Smalls, Unistat, BikeMutt: Thanks for the support.
Imaghn: Excellent. I'll stay connected, and will contact you if I get into your neck of the woods.
