I'm a 1911 guy. I carry a CDP Pro whenever I'm wearing pants and have a couple of full size 1911s in my collection from Kimber and Springfield.

The Glocks are intriguing though, and I figured in the interest of having something ugly and mudproof that I can take fishing, drop in the dirt or lose without feeling too bad about it...I ought to have a Glock. Just for those times when I want a gun on, but don't want to risk damaging or losing a nice one.

So, I've been kicking myself for not picking up a G30 I saw at a gunshow for $475 last spring. The little .45acp is the only Glock that has ever interested me...

Found one here on this forum the other night and picked it up from my FFL today.

Haven't shot it yet (that'll be tomorrow), but my first impressions are:
1. it's ugly
2. it feels like a lump in my hand
3. it's ugly

Looking forward to taking it out to the range tomorrow and seeing how it does! Maybe it shoots better than it looks or feels. Even if I never shoot it, I'll be glad to have it. The small size, ultra durability and reliability and heavy firepower make it worth having.

Gotta definitely have someone help me with that trigger...the 5lb. factory trigger is just WAY too much...especially with the long travel.

Oh well...I have a Glock now.

I fell into the darkside also once. And I'm a 1911 shooter.

Not too long ago, I was really intrigued by the Glock pistol. I found a beauty in them based on the simple lines, and the very utilitarian look. Too many lines and bubbly, you get the Pontiac Aztec, or the BMW 745i :barf:

Well... I bought a Glock 23, due to being intrigued by the .40 S&W caliber (prety big niche),and the polymer frame, lightweight, and a possibly great CCW package.

BUT.... I couldn't shoot it for beans. Grip angle was more aggressive than i was used to. I got used to the trigger, but it simply still sucks compared to a well tuned 1911 trigger.

What I did like however, it was very reliable, the manual of arms was very easy, and cleaning this thing I could do blindfolded and one handed.

But, my Glock days are over, I just sold my only Glock a few days ago to an owner that'll put MUCH more use out of the gun than I ever did.

btw, the trigger can be tweaked in so many ways. Go to Glocktalk.com. Look up the .25 cent trigger job. It shows you how to polish the internals. Next you can change the connector to a 3.5# connector instead of the stock 5# connector. Everyone seems to love the Scherer connector. But no matter the combination, I still couldn't become satisfied with the trigger, and it affected my shooting. Furthermore, the Glock reset is very short. Its fun :D

Good luck. :)

I've shot both of my dad's glocks and have come to the same conclusion
  • they always go "bang"- they feel very reliable and consistant.
  • they're quite accurate.
  • with 70% of the weight in the slide, it tends to adversely effect muzzle climb.

so all in all- I think they're very nice but just not my type. The weight ratio issue has pretty much convinced me to stick with metal framed pistols.

I noticed that, but haven't handled the gun loaded yet. I assumed 10rds of .45 in the magazine would balance it out...I'll have a range report later today I think.

I felt the same way a couple months ago. I'm not sure which one of us went farther to the dark side . . . you bought a glock, I bought a revolver :D

Well, we went to the range today. The gun is ugly, but it shoots really well. I was able to put 8 out of 10 rounds on the little (~10"x14") steel sillhouette at about 30 yds, shooting fast...over and over again. My 5" Kimber would do a little better than that.

The magazines are a BITCH to load! Now I know why people talk about sore thumbs from loading mags. The mags are advertised as 10rd mags...but they are really only 9rd.

I need some of those grip extensions for the mags..I have big hands and my hand want to slip off the bottom of the grip while I'm shooting.

The gun is small, accurate and reliable...so it's a natural choice for concealed carry (even though it's a little on the thick side, I think it'll hide nicely on my person).

I'm glad I bought it, I'll keep it, but I won't love it the way I do my 1911s.

I wasn't initially attracted to Glocks. They just didn't appeal to me. But my curiosity in the 10mm led me to the Glock 20 and the more I handled it, the more I liked it. Glocks grew on my and I love my 20 now. There's not a 1911 in the world I would give a second look if someone wanted to trade me for my Glock 20.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I don't find anything unattractive in Glocks and tend to admire their asthetics simply because it shows the pistol's rugged and simple functionallity. That's what it is for me--simply a matter of form truely following function--and then function winning acceptence of form.

Neon,

You are now the Bane of every 1911 .45 cal freak on this forum...how dare you not only leave the fold, but then to talk about it in public and even espouse and proselatize others the way you have.

Repent now and all will be forgiven. Sell me the Glock for half price and I will ensure that your .45 buddies don't dis-own you... :neener:

BTW, welcome to the dark side

Did you get a mag loader with it? When I had one, that was the only way I was able to squeeze in 10 rounds. The magazines did loosen up slightly after a while, but even then the gun didn't like it real well when I gave it full mags. As you noted, it really is more of a 9+1 gun. Pretty darn good one, though!

LOL! I haven't left the fold. I swear, this is the only Glock I'll ever buy. In fact, it's probably the only plastic gun I'll have, unless I find a simply irresistable deal on a HK USP .45...no way I'm paying what they're asking for one of those.

I'm still a 1911 man and doubt if I'll even carry the Glock much...just thought I ought to have at least one in the collection. And as long as I have one, I ought to be set up to carry it from time to time. Right?

Another factor is that I do some training with Tactical Response in TN...and they HATE 1911s. So next time I go (next week) I'll be able to at least have a Glock in my range bag.
Did you get a mag loader with it?
Yes, and it works great for rds. # 1 - #8...then even the mag loader doesn't help get the last 1 or 2 in the mag. I was told to load the mag and leave it loaded for a month or so and then try. Sounds good to me.

Take the advice about the Scherer connector and $.25 trigger job. For non-concealed carry, get a 13-rd. G21 mag with an A&G sleeve. Get Agrip from Brooks Tactical.

The fact that the bore axis is low and the slide mass is so much greater than the frame's mitigates, rather than exacerbates, muzzle flip. You'll find the G30 to be surprisingly accurate. Learn to shoot from the trigger reset position. Get some night sights. Don't overlube; only four or five small drops of oil are required. Don't let any oil or solvent get into the firing pin channel.

So there's no way you'll pay the same price for a pistol boasting extra capacity and features over your 1911?

Sometimes I swear 1911 fans are the most irrational bunch of gun owners on the planet.

Had a G22 that I picked up cheap, traded it off four months later. It was accurate enough and very reliable, but not comfortable to shoot and generally very ugly. If a good deal comes along on a 20 or 21, I might bite. But otherwise, there are nicer pistols for the same or lower $$. I would much sooner pay $350 for another Witness 10mm to beat on. Both hold 15+1, so there is no advantage in owning the G20.

I thought the same thing :what:. I got the 10th one in numerous times, but after I while I gave the mags to my buddy that has smaller fingers, he had a easier (but still very hard) time loading the 10th round.

The mags will get easier to load!!
During the dark time, there were reliable reports of magazines that could be loaded to one more round than the stated capacity. I know this to be true because I have two G26 mags that would do this.
Glock got paranoid and cut a coil off of their mag springs. Now, they will hold only the stated number of rounds. The offshoot is that the last round is a bi*** to get in!!
