picking brains on 9mm choices for law enforcement

Pluses and minuses for each if you would.

1. Glock 19
2. Sig 226
3. S&W 5946

I'm leaning towards the Sig, if I get that one, what's the best choice for an off duty from below?

Off Duty choices

1. S&W 3953 & 3914
2. Kahr K-9
3. Glock 26
4. Beretta 8000 Mini D

So far from what I've read here and on other forums, the Sig for on duty and the Glock 26 for off seem to be the most popular choices.

Any input would be appreciated.:banghead:

Depending on your hand size the G19 might be your best choice (IMO). The G19 is large enough to carry on duty (I do) and is a great choice for off duty as well (what I carry 90% of the time). Balances great firepower with L.E. mags, few sharp edges (a real consideration off duty), and light weight
(important!). The 226 and 5946 are also great choices for duty guns. I've never seen either one choke on a qualification run (well, a 226 once with cheap aftermarket mags - not the gun's fault!). Both are more expensive than the Glock, however, and not as well suited for off duty use. Both are also MUCH heavier.

Of your off duty choices I have no experience firing the Beretta 8000D but did find it a little thick and heavy while handling it. All your other choices are excellent (although I would keep the G19 in this catagory, also). You might choose to select your off duty based on what you decide upon for your on duty. Having all the controls in the same place makes for one less thing to think about under stress. The Sig P239 would also make a great addition to this list if you decide on the 226 for duty use.

You're picking some of the best 9mm's out there - hard to make a bad choice.

Or your choices, I like the Glock 19 & 26 since you can use the same mags in both. Thinking max capacity, I'd go w/ 17 mags.

That's the beauty of the G19 - it's a great service (on duty) pistol and a great concealed (off duty) pistol.

Whichever you pick, keep the same drill of arms between on and off duty, ie: unless you are very familiar with the different guns, I would recommend against mixing the Sig and Glock as you mention.

Thanks for your responses. I've edited my above post to show that after more research and handling, I'm very fond of the Sig Sauer 226. I like the solid feel and I'd really like to know what off duty choice would complement it?

those sigs have sweet triggers don't they? Glock is great, but you'll never get that awesome single action pull from a Glock. You also can't get that solid feel. Something about plastic guns, although they are just as solid, some guys i know jkust prefer the feel of steel or aluminum. Sig P239 would be good for concealment if you want it tiny. For a little more hand filling i would suggest a sig 229. I actually know a bunch of female and smaller handed male officers who prefer the 229 as an on duty sidearm.

Unfortunately, I have to stick with the choices given. I'd love to keep it in the family, but that's not an option.

I'd go with the Glock 19 and 26. The mags interchange, and the 26 is extremely easy to conceal. Both are light weight, meaning that they will be less of a pain to carry.

Whatever you do your best with. I personally don't care for the otherwise good P226 because it is just too dog gone big for a 9mm. This is probably just a mental thing with me, but I find the G19 a better pistol.

My first choice would be to just carry the G19 all the time; these are great pistols. If I carried the P226 on duty, then I'd carry it off duty too, or whichever pistol from the list I did best with. The Smith 3900 series is really good as well.

of your given choices for a duty gun, your best compromise is the glock 19 which i would also carry off-duty. i've tried the g-26 and i really doesn't do anything that the 19 won't (bear in mind that i'm prone to carry my beretta 92/96, both on and off duty)

the sig 226 will be more accurate but too big for off duty use.

the smith 39/59 series have faster trigger resets


if you'd really like a smaller gun for off duty wear, the kahr is the best on your list for size, accuracy and smoothness

I also think the G-19 would be your best choice. The SIG is a fine weapon of course, but the same amount of firepower is available in the smaller and lighter Glock. It would be good for concealment and as your duty sidearm, and will save you some $200 vs. the SIG.

As for the S&W, S&W makes nice revolvers..
