Pics of targets - am I missing a "default range"?

Been reloading a few years, and often see pics of various targets, with the accompanying "yep, these ACME bullets pushed by 7.5 grains of BurnsRealGuud powder out of my SuperBangShooterStick (with trigger mod by GunnyGunsmith) sure put out a nice grouping"......

BUT AT WHAT RANGE???

Is there a "default" range that is understood, implied, expected to be known by "those in the know"? Because it seems that the great majority of these targets don't have any distance specified. But I know that there's one heck of a difference in the way my targets look at 7 yards vs. 25 yards!

There's no standard unless the poster gives it. To be honest, I don't really pay much attention to groups posted on the internet. Not that some are not very accomplished marksmen, but there are just too many "too good to be true" groups that it's difficult to differentiate.

With a rifle, realistically, 100 yards is when it becomes to get difficult for me.

For pistol, it is typically at 25 yards, unless otherwise specified.

Here are initial targets shot over this past weekend that I am doing for 12/18 BHN comparison test
(target grids are 1 inch squares - 4.5" M&P45):

I always try to mark them for future reference.....or just mention in my post. Both of these @ 25 yards with 2 different GP100's. Left target is with a red dot and right one is open sights.

I don't generally post load data.....That is for you to figure out.

But I agree. A minimum of info is required to determine if the shooting is actually good. The average person I run into at the range is usually a very poor shot. Most people probably don't even want to fess up as to the range.

Unless the poster says, ya don't know. Bowder burns on the target are a clue tho. For handguns I use 25 yd, for rifles I use 100 yd.

when I shoot for groups, in order to compare components I always mark
the targets with load information so that I can keep a record for comparison. 308 col 004.jpg

"I thought all internet groups were 1/2", at 250 yds, all day long."

That is so true.....

I've been reloading for 15 years or so and shooting twice as long. Never owned 1 rifle that would do that. I might get lucky with a group every so often and hit 1/2". Maybe it's time for a full blown custom. Even then, I'd hate to be getting beat by all these guys who's factory rifles shoot 1/2" with any load all day long.

I find that people, even friends, grossly over estimate distances. One guy at work said a tree off in the distance was 400 yards. I asked him what kind of crack he was on.

I went out with a measuring wheel and it was just over 100 yards.

Gererally when I test for groups the below are true.

rimfire 50yrds
centerfire 100 yrds
pistol 7 to 25 yards

On a side note. A few weeks back a coworker said his pistol could fire 9mm, .40 S&W and .45 Acp.

I asked him what make? model? Taurus

I said bring in the owners manual and that he was mistaken. He accused me of taking him for a lier. I rib him for days trying to get him to bring the manual. He finally says after 3 days that the gun is AVAILABLE in 9, 40 and 45.

No ****
