After seeing a picture of a Colt being fired in the dark on here somewhere i thought i'd give it a go with my Uberti 1858. I think it turned out ok for a first attempt!

Filled the chamber to the top with Pyrodex for maximum flame and squeezed a ball on top set of with Rem no.10 cap. :)

Here is a 105mm howitzer firing a beehive round in the dark. The squiggly line is the tracer on the back of the round. I was holding the camera in my hand.

In that picture above, how did the hammer get in the cocked position and fire at once? Is that how much force comes through the nipple?

No. He took the picture using a flash (see how well lit his arm and hand are) then kept the shutter open to capture the muzzle flash.

The hammer remained at rest, as per usual.

Thanks fella's! The reason the hammer is back is that to get an exposure including the revolver - not just the pretty flame patterns, I had to fire the flash immediately before firing the pistol and then keeping the shutter open for a further 2 1/2 seconds to capture the flame and also some ambient light.

The hammer in the cocked position had me going too for a minute. It's interesting to note that there is almost no ignition debris from the cap, I've got shots of Colts being fired in time exposure that drive home the lesson that the cap will provide plenty of erroneous fire around the nipple. I'm impressed that there is basically NO blowback from the nipple in this shot, what kind of nipples are you using, I'm assuming that they wouldn't be stock?

Hi Joe, the nipples are actually the stock Uberti ones. Thought about upgrading but haven't had any problems with them and with a wee bit of copper grease haven't had a stuck one, YET!

GREAT Pic..I remember early spring it was getting late, the sun was setting and my brother and I were firing off the last cylinders of the day. The light was just right, the flames coming out the barrel, around the cylinder, and the greased was stuck to the ball going down to the target looking like a tracer..I shot it and let him see the same sight..Ya just don't notice those things with the modern firearms like that..
