What exactly is that mechanism on the front right side of that worn Colt (I believe?) revolver?

Is that some sort of gas assisted indexing system? Something all of those have or what?

Lovely Junk!

I am curious also, what is the mechanism of the Colt there?

Being current owner of a firearm salvage yard I would give you at least $2 a pound , and for this month only I would pay the shipping as well. :p

I've gotta know what you do for a living.
That's what I'm gonna do for a living as well!

From the OP on the sister forum:
It's a semi-automatic 22 revolver Colt experimental prototype.
the barrel moves when the gun is fired, it in turn moves the lever as shown on the side of the gun, that in turn rotates the cylinder.
Yes, it's a one of a kind and it came from Colt with a factory letter stating just that.
It was made in the late 50's

I was a bit stressed when Colt sold off the family jewels but they could not have hoped for a better custodian.

The "Flame Thrower" has a pretty unique look, any story or particular purpose behind the modifications?

Thanks guys.

As HAWK points out the funky looking wheelgun with wear is a semi-automatic 22 revolver Colt experimental prototype.

As for more pictures of some junk...

Six, when I had that custom done, I was just looking for something a little different. Something more modern.
The name Flame Thrower fit's it on 2 levels.
The gun was ported by JP Enterprises and let's you see flames out the sides of the barrel. After that was done I had one of our local gunsmiths refinish it for me with flames along the sides of the barrel. He also did the jeweling on the hammer & trigger. The gun has Elliason target sights from a Colt Gold Cup National Match along with Python Elite grips that I feel fit the hand much better than the original wood target grips/stocks form Colt.
I'm very happy with the way the whole package came out.
It's an excellent shooter.
Here's a better pic of the flames.

WardenWolf: Here's a better pic of the engraving on that Dan Wesson.
I got lucky when I found that one. The story I have is that it was factory engraved for display for the Dan Wesson company to take with them to shows. Even the screws and pins were engraved on it. You can see the heads of about 4 of them in the picture below.

Question - did you ever test fire that 22 semi-auto revolver?

I've never attempted to fire any of my experimental, prototypes or salesman samples. I just feel if something breaks it can never be replaced. Hope that makes sense.

Some of you have seen this one before, but for those that have not.
This is my favorite experimental prototype. It's a snub nosed 38 special Python. It's on a smaller frame and it led to the developement of the Colt Diamondback.
FYI: Colt never made a snub nosed 38 Python. Well, they made one and this one is it. Even the grips/stocks are one of a kind as they are smaller than any Python grips and these were never offered on any Diamondback.

If you think that is "junk" my friend, you need to go see a doctor or resume taking your meds.

Nice hardware, by the way. :)

Hey GUNKWAZY, guys like you really blow.......you snatch up all the really cool stuff, and just hoard it for yourselves. If you ever feel like changing your evil ways, and decide to spread it around a tad, feel free to PM me for my address. :D

Historic junk there for sure, thanks for sharing.

Unlike some of the others on here, I congratulate you on your collection. It is a very impressive, beautiful group of pistols. Thank you for sharing.

BTW, would you like to adopt a Grandfather?????;)
