I want to buy a spare barrel for my .44 Confederate Colt and hack it off to make a "snub" nosed cap n' ball, keeping the original 7.5 inch for loading. I have found some sources for replacement barrels, is there any risk that the new barrel might not fit?

Very little. Pietta has been pretty good on that score. VTI Gunparts has the barrels.

I got one off gunbroker.com. Forget what I paid for it, but wasn't bad. I have the 5.5" what the gun came with and was going to build a snub, but the 7" is so accurate, I haven't bothered to cut it down.

I just received a call from VTI Gunparts...I had ordered a barrel, 1851 Navy .44 5.5" about a year ago. He called me on the phone to see if I still wanted it, a shipment had 'finally' come in.
I was impressed that he held my order that long, and called me personally to see if I still wanted it.
It then arrived a few days later, brand new.
