Hi
How effective are these rounds on feral pigs?
What ammunition do you use?
Which do you like better for the task? Why?
Thanks
There are rounds like the 30-30, 7.62x39 (what the AK-47 shoots) and 223 (what the M-16 shoots) that I'd classify as a 1 on the rifle power scale. These have proven just fine on feral pigs.
next up I'd put the 243, 6mm, 25-06 and similar rounds, and I'd give them a 2 on the power scale. They'd be just fine for pigs.
THen you get to 'class 3' aka 'universal hunting rounds'...rounds that have been used for every animal in North America, jack of all trade rounds. These are the 30-06, 270, 308, 7mm mauser, 303, 284, and various others.
Next up would be the elk hunting rounds, the magnums. These would be the 7mm remington magnum, 300 winchester magnum, 300 weatherby, and a few others, at power level 4.
Next up would be the bear hunting rounds, things like the 338 winchester magnum, 8mm remington magnum, and a few others, at power level 5.
Next up would be the 'dangerous game rifles' generally used for lion, or going after bear in thick cover rather than more traditional hunting of bears. This is where you'd find the 375 H&H, 9.3mm, 378 weatherby, and a few others, at power level 6.
The 375 H&H is what I'd reach for if I had to stop a charging lion or a wounded grizzly going for vengeance. There's no pig on this planet that requires a 375 H&H. All you are doing is saddling yourself with one hammering of a heavy recoil and ammo that costs three times as much as any normal ammo.
Even if Hog-Zilla was real you'd not need a 375 H&H. Granted, if for some reason you already have a 375 H&H, by all means go shoot some pigs with it. But no way would I recommend getting one for hogs. Heck, I'd recommend a 338 winmag for grizzly rather than 375 H&H (again, unless you are LOOKING HARD for a reason to buy one)
