I have several Leupold scopes that look like that one and I've never seen a hole in the side. Is the hole plugged? If you want to check, dunking in warm water and looking for bubbles used to be a standard test. It probably has a lifetime warranty.
I just looked on my 2 Leupolds and found no pinhole.
As far as Nitrogen (or Argon in some scopes), I believe that the scope is assembled in a Nitrogen filled environment rather than "injecting" it into the scope.
I was in the field artillery in the Army National Guard (as a supply clerk). We were shooting illumination rounds one night and a noob asked me what lit them off in the air and what kept them up in the air. I couldn't resist such an open door.
I told him that each round had a specially trained monkey that would light off the round and then the monkey would ride a parachute with the illumination part down. We have special forces units that retrieve the monkeys called - wait for it - wait for it - here it comes.....
None of my Leupold have that hole there. Leupold was having a problem with counterfeit knock off scopes a few years ago. Something you might look into.
