Piranha Knives, can anyone shed some light on these knives for me? I haven't ever heard of them (but that's not saying much as I'm not much of a knife guy). I'm looking at the Shadow model, sales for 50.00. Worth the money? Quality? I'm looking for a small automatic knife and these seems to fit the bill, just don't want to buy something that isn't worth the money. Thanks for your help

They are relatively nice knives. I have no idea what alloy they use for the blades, though. The ones I have seen are not a high quality as a Benchmade.

Blade is 154 cm stainless. Having reviewed the web site and line of knives under the Piranna brand, they look pretty cheesy.

To be honest, I have no direct experience with this brand. But as a collector and user of knives for 40 years, I have yet to see an auto that will be used regularly that lasted under 100 bucks.

Quality mechanisms, workmanship and blade quality for a long lasting knife is a tough job for 50 bucks or even a 100 for that matter.

I glanced around BladeForums. The "Pirahna" brand was mentioned in a couple posts, and favorably both times.

If I were you, I'd sign up for BladeForums free Basic account, and go ask folks in their Switchblade forum.

EDIT: found a couple other positive posts on other forums, including several folks mentioning that these are built in Idaho, of all places. Not sure if all components are built in the U.S., or part outsourced, or what. Also note that 1sks sells the Pirahna line, and that's a pretty reputable online seller.

From 1sks:
PIRANHA AUTOMATIC KNIVES
Who says all cool knives have to be tactical?

A relatively new knife company, Piranha has been quitely producing fine automatics for 2 years. Like so many great automatic knife companies before them, the Pirahna Knife Co. began their life in a machine shop. Now they are using their precision machining knowledge and skills to produce high quality knives with a Sport Utility feel to them - strong enough to get the job done, but comfortable and pleasing to the eye.

I do like their "plum" metal finish. You don't see purple switchblades every day.

If you need a fallback plan, the Kershaw Chive (assisted-opening) knife is outstanding, and about $20. Gets rave reviews both here and BladeForum, pocket clip, stainless, lightning-fast, razor-sharp, etc.

Yes, I've handled them and own a couple and they're fine knives for EDC autos. The quality is excellent, the designs distinctive and still practical, the materials top notch. They're not Micros, but they don't cost like them either.
