According to North Carolina Firearm Laws , a pistol is defined as:

a firearm that has a short stock and is designed to be fired by the use of a single hand, or any combination of parts from which such a firearm can be assembled.

Based on the above definition, it would seem to me any autoloading shotgun (requiring only one hand to fire repeatedly, as opposed to the two-handed operation of a pump shotgun with a pistol grip) would fit this definition.

Has a shot stock

Check!

and is designed to be fired by the use of a single hand

Well, yes and no. A pump requires two hands (one to rack the slide, one to pull the trigger) while 1) an autoloader or 2) a single shot or 3) over/under all could be considered "designed to fire by the use of one hand" if they were equipped from the factory with a pistol grip.

Or any combination of parts from which such a firearm can be assembled

check! Based on this alone, it would seem a pistol grip for an autoloading shotgun alone would constitute a pistol. Heck, a pistol grip to fit a pump shotgun and a Dremel or sandpaper/putty could even be included under this definition.

The law can be interpreted in many ways, but just because there is some bodybuilding wannabe who can shoot a Barrett 50 caliber with one hand does not mean that possession of a Barrett constitutes possession of a handgun. Please name me one PG equipped autoloading shotgun? I thought they all had their springs in the buttstock. At least, the 1100 and Benelli do.

Article 53B. Firearm Regulation

14-409.39. Definitions. The following definitions apply in this Article:

(1) Dealer. Any person licensed as a dealer pursuant to 18 U.S.C. § 921, et seq., or G.S. 105-80.

(2) Firearm. A handgun, shotgun, or rifle which expels a projectile by action of an explosion.

(3) Handgun. A pistol, revolver, or other gun that has a short stock and is designed to be held and fired by the use of a single hand.

By definition, a firearm is a handgun OR a shotgun OR a rifle, so a pistol gripped shotgun cannot be considered a handgun.

I do like the part that classifies a short barreled shotgun as a Weapon of Mass Death and Destruction.

If you can fire a pistol-gripped 12 GA one-handed, you're a better man than I am.
:D I saw someone actually do this.....I had to go sit in the car cause I couldnt stop laughing.shotguns..onehanded grip and slugs..will give you a bad day everytime:D :D

Fire a shotgun one handed? Sure, I've done it many times. I found the sensation more pleasant than firing a 454 Cassul from a Ruger revolver. Of course, that was with 12 pellet 00 Buck, not 15 pellet 3" or a slug.
