Just a quick question based on something I heard. I live in Albany County (for about 10 years) and work (for about 6 years) in Rensselaer County. Somewhere online I recall seeing a post saying that sometimes you can get a permit based on where you work? Does this ring true or is it a load of BS? I have been contemplating a permit for some time now and am just wondering what the straight dope is.

Thanks.

I am in Greene county. I am pretty sure (99.999%) that the pistol permit is always issued by the county of your residence.
Call your sheriff's office and they will explain everything to you. The permit may take a while, so do it now.

Unless the laws have changed since I lived there. A NY state pistol permit is valid anywhere in NY state (except for the 5 boroughs) regardless of the county of issue . I applied for mine in Cattaraugus County (the county I lived in) and was able to carry anywhere within the state with the above exception. Yes, its expensive and takes about 8 or 9 months... hope this helps.

I have also heard that you can get a concealed carry license in a county based on your working in the county. Don't know if this is true or not. It is most likely up to the judge / police in the county you are applying in.

I wish New York would handle gun licensing the way Florida does where you are approved unless there is some criminal reason for you to be denied.

I live in Suffolk county New York and it takes an act of God to get a concealed carry license here.

Just move to Rens co......seriously,it's where you live not work. Are you in the city of Albany?Jennings is a moron lately, and you'll have a hell of a time getting your permit if you're in the city.I was a South end kid myself, but now I live in the boonies of Schodack(seems like it to me anyway)....I never even tried to get mine while I lived in Albany(city)....I know people whgo live the county of Albany, but not the city and it varies so much it's rediculous....good luck.

Alot of it is dependent on the judge, but you can apply in the county where you work. It does increase the possibility of getting a limited permit, like maybe for only at or to/from work.

I could be wrong on this, but I was under the impression that all albany county permits are limited to being "target" permits, meaning to and from the range only, and not full carry... or maybe that's just city of albany. I don't know really.

I know a few people who got there restrictions off in Albany Co....none in the city though.....one guy took an advanced weapons course and wrote the judge...one guy is disabled and had a good judge....it's really up to the judges in Albany and surrounding counties..some places in NYS it's the local sherriff In my county(Rens.)I know quite a few w/out restrictions..we have a great judge and pistol clerk...

State law says you may apply for your pistol permit in the county you reside or the county you work. But, be warned, i'm told the courts take fishing for "easy" hard.

The county you live in issues your CCW, but if you work for a bank, armorred car Co., or prisoner transport Co. the state will issue that permit after Qual's.

Thanks for all the replies. Addendum to my original message:

I live north of Albany (Cohoes/Latham area), not in the city so maybe that would help? Also, another question to piggyback on this thread, I may be moving within the next few months (still within Albany County). Should I wait until I move to submit the application? I'd hate to spend my time and money only to get it denied because I moved during the process.

Wild, as far as the moving thing.. if it were me, I'd go bring up that issue with the county permit office clerk. I don't know about Albany county, but here in Ulster the county clerk is very helpful and can give you much better answers than someone else's hearsay. Maureen (our permit clerk) is truly a sweet rose of a woman, and we're lucky to have her. She always knows the answers and is happy to cheerfully help out with questions.

Sounds good :) Let us know what information you get. The issue of moving during the permit process is sort of an interesting one, and I'm sure someone else along the line will benefit from it.
