I'm going to build a pistol rack for my new safe. I've heard that certain types of wood and some composite materials contain chemicals which are bad for the finish on firearms. Any recommendations on what to build it out of?
If you do not go the wire racks with the plastic coating, I would go with something like polyethylene from a plastics house that you can shape however you want. won't scratch the surface, won't retain moisture from water, solvents or oil.
Personally, I use the plastic-coated wire racks sold through Cabelas, Midway, etc. work great for my safe
rbunt, be very careful with those. Mine worked with no problem for a couple of years and even held N frame Smiths. Then one day I came home from work and a Model 19 was down among the wood stocked rifle butts in the safe. It put a nice ding in my Sharps forearm and stock when it fell. My bosses custom Jaeger .270 was just across from it and got missed thank God. It sports a 4K dollar piece of wood!, I do believe I would have died if that one had gotten dinged. Got rid of all the velcro pronto and went with plastic coated, wire dish racks from Dollar General. Still sick over the safe rash on my Sharps.
I created some utilitarian "pistol racks" for my gunsafes with some available strips of ~⅜" plyboard, small-head ~2-2½" "sheetrock"-type screws, an on-hand can of spray paint and some surgical tubing that I had in my kit that would snugly fit on over the screws.
I painted the pieces of wood and, after it dried, installed the screws about 2" apart so that their tips poked thru the bottom (they engage the shelf carpet so the rack strip does not slide) and then covered the upper parts of the screws with the surgical tubing.
Barrels of pistols are inserted between the screws, rest on the shelf and lean on one of the 2 covered screws.
