hey everyone, today while I was at my Iraqi Police station they brought some guys in who looking to rob people as they were leaving a bank. in their possession were two pistols both quite interesting in my mind.

One was an Iraqi built pistol, 9mm, based off of a beretta I believe, only it was a single stack, single action and the mag release was at the top of the grip up by the slide. didn't think to write down where it was from and all that but I think it was made in tikrit.

the other was a remington rand 1911 A1 property of the united states gov. serial number was 2194439 and was made in Syracuse NY. all in all the condidtion of the 1911 was pretty good, grips were mint, the finish showed some nice holster wear and while the springs were pretty weak and the grip safety seemed not to work, some minor superficial rust here and there and a bunch of grime on it, I'd say it was in very nice condition. Does anyone have an idea on how old it might be and all that? I wish I could bring it back to the states with me but being that its evidence in a crime, aint going to happen.

I found the last part of your comments timely....Don't be surprised to find many of the U.S. supplied weapons on your lap. The GAO has been testifying before Congress about the unaccounted Billions $$$$ in supplies, specifically weapons that cannot be located....Graft, corruption, and our own supplies being used against our troops...Of course, this is nothing new; but damn depressing....:(
The production date on that particular pistol is 1945. A keeper....

I'm pretty sure the 1911 is a WWII vintage Remmington Rand which was a very common issue sidearm during WWII and the cold war era and would have a very interesting life story if it could talk.

The other pistol is called a Tariq and it is an Iraq built copy of the Beretta 951.
Be on the look out for a middle east copy of the Beretta M92/M9.
It will be an earlier version of the Beretta 92S, slide mounted safety/decocker, magazine release may be low on the left grip or it may have an American style mag release behind the left side of the trigger guard.
It will also have a rounded trigger guard.
These are supposed to have been made in Iran and if you find one you may want to "ask" the bearer where exactly he got his shooting iron,,,,,,

Yes, that first pistol sounds like a Tariq. It is nothing to look at, but I have it on good authority that it runs quite well in dusty/sandy environment of Iraq. One of my coworkers "lost" his issue sidearm when he was on active duty and replaced it with a Tariq, and considered it a step up.

very cool guys, thank you for the info, I must say its really neat how I run into these interesting weapons from time to time at my station. Maybe I can make the argument that the 1911 was/is us gov. property and should be returned (i.e. hopefully to my collection, where it would find a loving home)

on a side note, the Tariq, which I'm almost positive thats what it was, looked almost brand new, neglected and abused, but it apeared to have I'd say 5 to 10 rounds put through it in its life.

Hey rero360, maybe you can't bring those pistols back, but is there any chance you can take some pics?

yeah, thats what I figured, its really to bad. but I'll try to get some pics in a couple of days when we go back to the station.
