hey, im going on a roadtrip to new mexico or arizona and i wanted to know where i could shoot in the desert, a specific location would be best. can i just go to the desert and shoot?
Check laws - AZ requires you be 1 mile from any occupied structore before discharging a round. Used to be 1/4 mile, but they changed it. Look for a copy of Arizona Gun Owners' Guide.
Here is a link to the city range just west of Albuquerque. I have
used this range many times. It is a supervised range. Can shoot
at a wide variety of distances.
Always double check the status of the land. Many areas of BLM land are converted to State Trust Land, etc... which changes the status if you can shoot or not. If the status has changed it is your responsibility to find that out. I have personally seen a guy get his pistol and AR confiscated after shooting illegally on what the guy thought was BLM land.
In the Albuquerque area there is the San Ysidro Open Space off of SR 550 if you want some unsupervised shooting in the desert. People shoot out here in the middle of nowhere and get away with it but it is illegal in Bernallilo County.
BLM lands outside Phoenix (or anywhere for that matter). Keep off Indian lands. The Tonto National Forest is on my todo list but so are alot of other things these days
