Mods, I'll take no offense if you lock or move this if it is not the appropriate place.

I'm moving to the Winston Salem, NC area next month, and was wondering about various ranges, both pistol and rifle. Looking this stuff up is on my list of things I gotta do, but selling, moving and buying are higher priority right now.

Thanks all.

Places to shoot

Indoor range in Oldtown area called Grandview Firearms Training center, I shot there once or twice years ago, but I've heard they require a membership now that isn't cheap and requires a background check, etc.

If you don't mind a short drive, in Mt. Airy (30 miles North of WS on US-52) Check out Gun Country, 75 foot pistol range, old-style gun shop run by Bob Poplin for over 20 years. (more info at http://www.popsgunshop.com/) Added bonus, show up on a Friday and you'll find me helping out behind the counter.:what:

Several other outdoor ranges in Surry county should you want some rifle practice, let us know how far you'll drive if you want more info.

Hope this helps.

Ramius

Grandview does not require background checks, where did you hear that? Also they have always required a membership. I shoot there and live less than 15 minutes away so I am biased. Here is the link.

SkyDaver I have been by Gun Country but don't remember how to got there and I have heard a lot of good things about the folks at Gun Country. They helped a friend of mine and her husband pick out pistols.

Correction

Sorry if the information I gave was out of date, but when I last visited Grandview- many years ago- I remember I had to get a membership, and I was thinking you had to wait while it was processed, and that part of that was a quick background check- same thing as if you were purchasing a firearm.

Again, sorry if I messed up. It seemed like a really nice place, but of course living in Mt Airy Gun Country is a lot closer, as well as less expensive.

Check out the link if you wish to visit Gun Country, there is a map posted there that is better than my directions.

Stay safe.

Ramius no problem and I understand you living in Mt. Airy it would be foolish to drive 30 minutes to GFTC. That said next time I have a day off I might have to ride up to Mt. Airy and check out Gun Country.

Invitation

By all means, consider your self invited. Be happy to see all of you.

I'm there on Fridays, and my wife and some co-workers of hers shoot on Thursday afternoons usually.

See you any time you can get by.

Ramius.

PHA Range west of Lexington

Piedmont Handgunners Association has a members-only range just west of Lexington... I'm hoping to visit it this weekend.

Everyone should try Windy Hill range near Elkin, west of W-S. Very nice drive, and nice folks to visit.

I am a member at Calibers Shooting Range in Greensnboro.

Winston Salem Shooting

If you what a outdoor situation IDPA , you might consider The Range in Oxford.
Weekly Sunday Shoots.
If interested check out the Web Page Glory Road or The Range / Oxford NC.

The Oxford crowd is great and people are from all over including Winston Salem / Greensboro / Mt Airy / Raleigh / Rocky Mount / to just name a few places.

Frank also puts on a 3 Gun once a month if you have a interest.

Not too near Winston but is the Riverside Gun Club still in operation near Ramseur? I went there many years ago to shoot for a Garand but haven't heard from them since? They had a lot of carbines that belonged to the club. They also had a lot of great historic arms events.

Thanks to all

I'll be checking them out when I get there.

The month of Feb. is a goner. We're darn close to getting a contract on our house near Raleigh, and will be getting ready to move (meaning I miss the Appleseed shoot :-( ). I've got a Garand that needs exercise...

We should be in W-S in March, and in an apartment waiting for a new house to get built, so I *hope* to have a lot of weekend time over the spring and summer... no yard work, no house maintenance work.

The apt. and new house are both on the NW side of W-S, so Mt. Airy is sounding especially good.

El Stupido behind the keyboard realized he hadn't subscribed to the thread, but that's fixed now.

Any more suggestions will be gratefully received.

Two more places to shoot.

I'm a member of the Yadkin Valley Sportsman Club. We have a little 200-yard range in the shadow of Pilot Mountain (about 30 minutes from where I live in Winston-Salem.) We shoot the National Match course the 2nd Saturday of most months. My info is available through THR if you want to know more.

There is a public range in Uhwharrhie. For info go to:
http://uwharrie.proboards100.com/index.cgi?board=general

I shoot at Calibers in Greensboro occassionally. It is a nice place. (I don't count this among the "more places to shoot" as it's been mentioned already.)

Thanks, Jim!

The Yadkin Valley Sportsman's Club sounds great, and an easy trip, as we'll be living just NW of Wake Forest Univ. I'll get in contact after the move, and after we get settled in. We'll be in an apartment for 6 months or so ... no yard work, no house maintenance, so I'm hoping to have a lot of free weekends this summer!

It would be difficult to research and quantify, but I think Jim's post might be one of the best first posts ever!
