Hello all,

My friend is selling a car to a gentlemen from out west. He will be meeting this gentleman in Chicago, Illinois to exchange car for cash. He has asked me to ride along with him for the trip (safety in numbers and all that), and I would like to carry my handgun with me. The trip will take us mostly through Michigan, then through Indiana for a breif amount of time, and finally into Illinois long enough to transfer the vehicle to the buyer.

I have a Michigan CPL, so the Michigan portion of the trip is covered. I would like to get some Indiana residents and Illinois residents to chime in with the legalities of carrying my handgun if I could.

As far as I can tell from looking at the Indiana laws, they honor my permit, and I should be fine. Is there anything special that I need to know about carrying in Indiana?

From looking at www.packing.org, it appears that while we are in Illinois, I will have to disassemble the weapon, and store it in a locked case, separated from the ammunition and inaccesible to us. Is this correct? We will most likely be in a pickup truck, towing a car trailer, will the police want the gun stored in the bed of the truck or can I store it in the extended cab portion of the truck, just not accesible to us?

Any information you guys can give me will be greatly appreciated,

Thans in advance! :)

From what I've heard, leave the guns at home through Illinois, especially if you touch Chicago.

It looks like your about right. Indiana does recognize it's neighbors permits. IL is really inconvenient about that crap. I try to stay away as much as possible and will gladly spend my money in the free states of KY and OH over IL any day.

If you entered Cook County/Chicago and were involved in an accident (or whatever) and a handgun was discovered you'd be in serious trouble, regardless of what condition the gun was in. As a traveler you are somewhat protected by the federal FOPA, so long as the gun is unloaded, locked in a case, and not accessable. However the Chicago Police Department is one of the most corrupt in the Nation, and while you might pervail in the end, you would be forced through a long and expensive legal process.

Perhaps the best way to revolve this would be to ask the car seller to come a bit further, and meet you in Indiana or even Michigan. To sweeten the proposal the buyer might offer to pay him a bit more. The additional expense to the buyer would be next to nothing if you got caught with a handgun in Chicago.

Great idea. As much as I hate to say it, if you're going to meet him in Chicago, maybe he could drive a little further and meet in Gary:eek: . Hey, at least you can defend yourself:cool:

Gary?:uhoh: Maybe Lake Station or Hammond instead? Maybe Beverly Shores you could hit the beach, go sailing and run around in the Dunes all while wearing your .45.:D

For clarification of Indiana law, Indiana recognizes all other states and foreign countries, not just our nieghbors. So if you have a license from Michigan or Monte Carlo you can carry legally in Indiana under the terms of your license as long as you are not a resident of the Hoosier State. Indiana Code 35-47-2-21 (b).

Threads like this remind the peasants of Illinois--take up the cause of national reciprocity and obtain a concealed carry permit from a free state.

Don't stop in Chicago (on interstate you can drive through) and keep the weapon unloaded and cased while in Illinois. Hope you don't have cause to need a weapon while you're passing through.

I agree, do whatever you can to stay out of Chicago. When I drive from SC to Milwaukee, I take the road through Normal and avoid cjitcago altogether. One of my friends in WI has a nice place to shoot, and I normally bring a couple of AR's and pistols along. Would hate to explain that to the crooked daley cops in case of an accident.

Thanks a bunch for the information guys. :)

I've been talking to my buddy, and he has agreed to try and get the buyer to meet us in Indiana, instead of Chicago. Hopefully the buyer will go for it. If not, I think I'll be leaving the gun at home, as I definitely don't want any trouble in Chicago.
