Talking to a lawyer is sound advice. If your spouse legally purchased the guns, they are legally still his. Is he still living ? Is he still around ? Are you cute ? O.K. just kidding on that one.

Talk to a lawyer to find out what your OPTIONS are, then you can make an informed decision.

It's illegal for you to even posess those weapons in NY, prior to securing your licensing. Do not attempt to sell them or transport them to an FFL in NY. You should return them to the state where they were legally purchased and leave them with friend/family.

If you end up applying for your NY pistol license, DO NOT disclose to the authorities that you currently have posession of the handguns.

Good luck!

First I am not a lawyer
If I were in your situation, I would put the guns in a locked container, then put that in the trunk of my car (or hidden in the back of an SUV, Station wagon or similar).
I would then drive to Vermont, without any unnecessary stops. I would have filled the tank prior to putting the guns in the car. I wouldn't stop for lunch etc. until I was in VT.
I would then go to a friendly gunshop in VT that I had previously located. I would sell/consign the guns there.

How hard is it to get the NYS pistol permit? You could just take the guns back out of state while waiting for your pistol permits to be processed. Keep them with friends or family, or even in a bank safe deposit box out of state, until you are officially legal to own them again.

That's what I'd do.

Bingo. Two best options, IMO:

1) Take them back to where you came from, transfer the ownership to a friend or relative there, and have that person sell them for you.

2) Have a friend or relative "back home" hold them for you until you (or your husband, or both) can get a NYS pistol permit. Then have them shipped to an FFL in New York, who will legally transfer them to you. The kicker is that the license process takes from 3 to 6 months, depending on your county (it can take longer, but it's supposed to be no longer than 6 months...), and the FFL will charge you for the transfer, usually from $20 to $40 per gun.

This. My daughter just moved to NY state, and her pistol is locked in my safe until she applies for and receives her license.

It's a pain. NY is a "may issue" state, and the permits are issued by county judges; some are reasonable, most are not. Many grant a permit, but then administratively stamp it "For hunting and target shooting only." Requires a safety course, background check, money, and time. Further, NY doesn't have reciprocity with any other state, and they don't issue permits to non-residents. So when I moved to PA, I gave up my ability to hunt NY with a handgun ... an ability it had taken me years to win.

But I think the best advice to the OP thus far is to quietly transport the handguns back out of state and secure them with family or friends until they can be sold out of state, or she or her husband acquire a pistol permit.

Jenna,

Do you have any friends or family back in the gun-friendly state where you used to live? If so, see if they will sell the guns for you... You can always give them the guns, pay for a classified ad, and more or less wash your hands of this issue!

NY has some strange firearms laws, and I'm not very familiar with all of their regulations. As such, I don't want to be responsible for giving you bad advice about how things work in that state!

Just a thought: New York has a "premises-only" permit that allows you only to keep a handgun in your home. (Most people apply for a full-carry, and try to get it without restrictions.) Your permit might come more quickly if you applied for premises-only. You could always upgrade it later if you decide to keep the guns.
