It's called the Rifle Barrel Stop Assembly

It's only used with the M203 quick/detatch (QD) mount. The following is from TM 9-1005-319-23&P, Change 6, Page 4-13:

RIFLE ADAPTER RAIL ONLY. Installation instructions for M203 Quick Attach/Detatch (QD) Barrel Stop to M16A4 Rifle Barrel.

a. The M203 quick attach/detatch (QD) barrel stop for M16A4 rifle barrel is provided as an integral component of the rifle adapter rail. Please note that your rifle adapter rail includes this item.

b. The purpose of the user installing the barrel stop to the rifle barrel is to provide a shoulder or "Stop" just behind the front sight and handguard cap assembly of the M16A4 rifle. Once the stop and adapter rail is installed, M203 launchers equipped with the M203 quick/detatch (QD) mount can be mounted to the M16A4 rifle. All M16A4 rifles should have this barrel stop installed.

c. Install the stop by placing it over a thin section of the barrel from the six oclock position, while avoinding contact with the gas tube. Rotate it so it's opening is pointed up towards the gas tube. Slide the stop forward until the flat vertical portion fits into the triangular sides of the forward handguard cap with the springs to the rear.

The illustration shows it up against the barrel where it starts getting heavy. If I can every find a Windows XP driver for my old Mustek scanner, I'll post the illustration. If you don't intend on mounting the M203 QD version, you probably don't need to install it.

Great idea! I might be just using it for that sice I can't mount a 203 on my rifle anyway!! I wonder when are they going to make rail mount bayonets? Sword size bayonet may be in style once again! :uhoh:
