Guys I am going to take the plunge and finally get a ak in the next month, need some help, some say the wasr is junk because it has been butcherd on in the mag well but some like theirs, opinions on them please. Also I am looking at the saiga's but dont know much about them other than I dont care for the butt stock design, opinions on them to please. Also I like the sar's but they are hard to find and the price seems to of jumped up on them. Any opinions would be great on what ak I should get with a budget of around $350.00 - $400.00 range. Thanks

I like my SAR-1. Lots of fun. The wasr seems to have a fairly good reputation. Everyone that I know that has one seems pleased.
Someone correct me, but I don't think the newer ones are butchered.

I've heard that on the WASR-10, the mag follower is counted as one of the US made parts. Meaning that if you were to put a completely imported mag in it, you would be violating the US parts on an import rule. Not sure if that is true or not...
Personally, in that price range, I would be looking for a SAR-1.

I 'am really thinking hard on getting the short saiga and sending it to be modified with a regular buttstock and pistol grip. Anyone know if highcaps are being made or imported yet. Also could someone that has one give me opinions on them (how many rounds has it shot without breaking) . Also before I start hearing about the legal status of the stock keep I will go ahead and save some writing on that matter and say "I am not to worried as to the legality of having the butstock changed without adding more US parts, the small town were I live it would not be a problem." Thanks again for any info.

The only problem I've heard of (and experienced) with the WASR-10 conversions is that some mags didn't want to seat because Century wasn't careful enough and left a couple of burrs at the back of the magwell. 30 seconds work with a dremel took care of that. That and trigger slap but that's endemic to the SAR series as well - the cheap fire control group that Century puts in causes it.
I'm still waiting to pick up my first AK, so I'm not talking with any real knowledge.
I have done a bit of research though, and I'm going to pay a little more and not take a chance on anything built by Century Arms.
I'm hoping to pick up my Vector on Saturday.

The SAR-1 is nice, but if you want the utmost in quality then might I recommend the Hungarian SA85M. I have one, and it blows away all others in pure quality and worksmanship. 1.5 MOA out of the box with Iron sights. The furniture is collectors grade. I personally think it is the Weatherby of AK Variants.

I also vote the SAR-1, best bet would be to wait for the next NGD in Louisville and see what you can find. There should be a great selection to choose from at all differant price levels. pick up extra mags and ammo too. That is where I picked up mine last year.

All the Romanian AK rifles imported after the date of this ruling

could only use single stack 10rd mags. Century Arms converted AK rifles to use high capasity mags and added 5 US made parts which are the trigger,sear,hammer,gas piston,and pistol grip. So any model of Romanian AK rifle converted by Century Arms has only 10 imported parts and legal to use with any hi cap mag.
They imported the model WASR in 1998,the SAR-1 in 1999 to 2003,and the WASR-10 in 1999 and 2004. They converted very few of the WASR-10 rifles to use hi cap mags till the 2004 imported rifles.
The quality control slipped on the WASR rifles and a few started showing up with the front sights canted that is pressed on the barrel off center slightly leaning to one side. But the quality control really started going down hill with the SAR-1 rifles as a larger percentage of owners reported canted front sights,rear sights,and/or gas blocks on their new rifles. Here is how to fix the problem

As you can see from the second picture the front sight has been adjusted all the way to one side to try and make up for the front sight being canted. Some rifles this will work but most it will not.
