Hi everyone. I'm trying to order some Meprolight night sights for my Sig P229 and I'm having trouble deciding which number front sight to buy. Most places are saying #8 front/#8 rear for 9mm/.357 Sig models and #6 front/#8 rear for .40/.45 models. Considering my P229 can be a .40 or .357 with just a barrel swap, I'm a little confused on which number to buy.

Anyone out there with Meps on a P229 .40 care to comment? What number front sight are you using and what is your POA/POI like?

    Thanks!

I've shot 357 SIG and .40 S&W in my P229. 6 front/8 rear seemed to work for both. 6/8 is what comes with pistols originally barrelled as .40s.

That's interesting because my CPO non-railed P229 .40 came with a #8 front sight and POA/POI seems to be just right. I was grouping within 6" at 25 yards and was using the top edge of the front sight as my intended POA/POI. I don't like the "cover target with the dot" method nor the 6 o'clock bullseye method. Basically, I'm after this sight picture right here:

So do I order the #8/#8 and assume it will shoot the same as it does now, or should I do what they say and go with the #6/#8 combination?

I just found this chart on another site:

    List of SIG Sight HEIGHTS

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Rear Sight Heights:

    #4 = 5.24mm (0.21 inches)
    #5 = 5.52mm (0.22 inches)
    #6 = 5.80mm (0.23 inches)
    #7 = 6.07mm (0.24 inches)
    #8 = 6.35mm (0.25 inches)
    #9 = 6.62mm (0.26 inches)
    #10 = 6.90mm (0.27 inches)

    Front Sight Heights:

    #5 = 6.01mm (0.235 inches)
    #6 = 5.88mm (0.230 inches)
    #7 = 5.74mm (0.225 inches)
    #8 = 5.60mm (0.220 inches)
    #9 = 5.46mm (0.215 inches)
    #10 = 5.32mm (0.210 inches)

Looks like the front sight is opposite from the rear in that it gets shorter as the # goes up. This probably explains why my gun shoots great with the #8 sight. Supposedly, Sigs leave the factory with a "combat sight picture," which means cover POI with the dot on the front sight. To bring POI up a bit so the bullet impacts at the top edge of the sight instead of behind the dot, a shorter front sight would be needed. I think the shorter #8 on my gun is actually giving me the sight picture I prefer. Makes me think I should go for #8/#8 with the Meprolights. I guess there's no way to be 100% sure though.

What would really be great is if someone with Meprolights on their P229 .40 could chime in with the # on their front sight and where POI is relative to the top edge of the front sight blade.
