Apologies if this has already been done to death ( yeah, right, like there's a subject that hasn't been:D ), but I came up with very little after a forum search.
Anyway, I just picked up an old Single Six revolver with 5 1/2 in. barrel, and as we all probably do when we get a toy in a new chambering, I'm looking to put up some ammo ( I have .22's, just no .22 mags).
This is only a casual plinker, so I'm not likely to go to the trouble of buying numerous ammo's, and "see what it likes".
Ammotogo has some decent prices on some Fiocchi 40 gr. HP ( $500 rds. for $75) but I stumbled on a few very negative reviews ( lots of FTF's) of the Fiocchi over at Cabellas ( I've always like Fiocchi in 9mm and .38 ).
I know CCI is always great stuff, but is noticably pricier.
I'm hoping to drop by a couple wal-marts this afternoon and see what's available locally.
Any recommendations/advice/warnings whatsoever is much appreciated.......

My Single Six with 4 5/8 bbl. does very well with Winchester Magnum 40 grain JHP or FMJ. The Win's perform just a bit better than the CCI 40 grains.

Both brands are good choices.

I'd suggest Winchester Dynapoints. They're economically priced and shoot well from my Single Six. They are not the fastest .22 Mag but for plinking they work just fine.

The Ruger Convertable was designed around Winchester Super-X 40 grain solids way back then I betcha.
There wasn't much else then.

I'd sure try some of them.

Thanks guys, I just got back from wal-mart, and got their last box of Winchester Dynapoints ( around $8+) and two boxes of CCI Maxi-Mags ( for $10.97 ). I'll keep an eye out for those Win. Super-X's, and try and grab some more Dynapoints whenever they show up again.

Mine is a 5.5 " convertible too. It LOVES the Winchester hp or the CCi version. Hell, It's not very finicky about any ammo that I've tried in her. And I've had this one for almost 30 years.

I did some velocity and accuracy testing with some .22 Mag ammo not long ago. I wish I could find the post. It was all shot from a 1 5/8" NAA Mini and a 6" Colt. I now use the Hornady ammo with the 33 Gr V Max bullet in my Mini. I guess the next step is to do some wet phone book or water jug tests.

I prefer the new speer gold dot .22 mag solids. They work as well as CCI and are around the same price point.

none of my own WMRs seem to much care what you run thru 'em, and I have had good luck with the Fioochi stuff myself, although I suspect their rims are a tiny tad thicker than most
mostly I just buy whatever looks cheap
only stuff I predict misfires with is the older/lighter/shorter WRF stuff (22 mag "short", if you will)... but it's extra cheap range revolver fodder

PS
don't be real surprised if case ejection gets a little bit stubborn after the 1st 6 dozen rounds out of a 22WMR cylinder
it's pretty common, nothing wrong, just keep your cylinder real clean.. magnum pressures are pretty high even in rimfire, and the fired cases tend to fill out the holes pretty well, that's all

Thanks again, guys. I went by another Wally World this a.m. before work, and grabbed another box of Dyna-points and two more boxes of CCI maxi-mags.They had some Remington ammo that was more expensive than both the CCI and Winny, but given Remy's less-than-stellar ammo reputation, I let it slide ( though I do like Golden Sabres).
I'll keep an eye put for those Speers, but I'll have to increase my search radius. :D
