Just got an Iver Johnson Super Trap not knowing much about them, except that they look great and seem rather rare.

Could the Forum please tell me everything they know about these guns, including when they were made, how many were made, and if they hold up under moderate use at the trap line.

My serial number is in the 5,400's

Thank you

They were discontinued in 1941 or 1942. The earlier Hercules model Trap was similar and has an engraved animal on the side. The later version ('36-'42) doesn't.

I need to look it up again when I get home. I fell asleep last night before I typed a response.

I don't see why it wouldn't be a perfectly useable gun if the bore is nice and shiny and not pitted with rust.

Come to think of it, the question I had last night was...

What does the gun say on the receiver? I tried zooming in on it, but it didn't help.

I've actually never seen one of those.

If it's not marked "Hercules Grade" its the lower end model (If I read my research right).

I'll PM you a link to anorther thread I found that's got alot of information.

The Super Trap was ONLY made in 12 ga. The examples I've seen recently online show a variety of wood grades, which is also a clue in the value.

If it was me I'd strip the old varnish off and give it an oil finish. That way the scratches wouldn't show and it will bring out any figuring available in the wood. IJ was never a 'high end' maker, and I doubt you'll hurt the value much.
