When I was growing up in Las Vegas my dad would take us outside the city limits to the foothills of the mountains where we could shoot all kinds of fun things (stuff just dumped in the desert). I live in Denver now and would like to give my family the same opportunity. A local range shop tells me I can shoot on any BLM land but I'd have to buy some kind of official map. The local police department offered no guidance. Does any know where I can drive to in the foothills to do some handgun/rifle/shotgun plinking within an easy drive from Denver?

Check with the local Forest Service office. You can shoot on any Forest Service or BLM land, in theory. But they would be the ones to tell you best where you can and or can not shoot. This is the link the the Arapaho National Forest and Pawnee National Grasslands page:

Though it appears they are pulling maintenance on it at the moment.
You might also give the Aurora Gun Club a look:

I have been looking for 10 years and there is no place close. To plink, you are going to be driving a while.

There is a free, public state range between Hot Sulpher Springs and Kremmling. It is the closest thing that comes to a place to shoot tin cans that I can think of. It is over 2 hours outside of Denver (out I-70 to highway 40, then over Berthod Pass, through Winter Park, Granby, and Hot Sulpher Springs, and Byers Canyon. It is on the right.)

There are some indoor ranges in the Denver Metro area. Outdoor ranges began vanishing from the area in the 1980's and are gone except for the private ranges and clubs.d. The only outdoor ranges in the area have waiting lists from 2 to 8 YEARS.

Some of the gun shops maintain a list of shooting ranges that are open to the public--generally in the fall. There are some excellent ranges that are taking new members, but they are over an hour outside of Denver. There are also some indoor ranges that are actively soliciting new members.

But, I am unaware of any place close that you can plink. I go to the Ranch in West Texas. It is only a 12.5 hour drive, but I can plink all I want.

Where are you, exactly? Denver's a big place. I can recommend a place, but it's way down by Woodland Park. There's just so damn many people living all over the place, "nearby plinking spots" are pretty much nonexistant.

Might want to join up at www.co-ar15.com , lots of local shooters there who might have more places to offer. I'm a member of the Ben Lomond Gun Club, which is well worth the cost and effort, but it's still a long drive. It's hard to beat 560 acres of private land with multiple ranges though. www.blgc.org

Thanks. I am up north in the northwest (but not in Boulder County). I am a member of a club out east with a number of different ranges. The drive takes me far enough away from the city that I can breathe.
