This may sound crazy, but I’m looking to work up a good plinking load for my .300 win mag. I have some 147 grain FMJ bullets that work pretty nice as a .308 Win load, the only problem is that nobody publishes a load for this bullet in the mag. I’m mainly looking to make it a more economical rifle to practice with as well as the fun of playing with a new load. Does anybody have any experience with 147 gr bullets in a .300 mag? If so, what OAL length and powder charge would you recommend starting with.

Not with 300 mag but have loaded 223, 270 and 308 at 1200 to maybe 2000 fps using Unique, and have been reading that Trail Boss is a good light load powder for plinking.
I have no data here in front of me but do some checking as those and some other powders work OK. Light loads data is kinda hard to come by was my experience.

Doesn't have to be super light, but I'd say that 2300-2700 fps would be pretty much what I'm looking for.

This data is for the 300 Winchester Magnum, not the Winchester Short Magnum.

IMR 7828 75.0 gr 2913 fps 46,200 PSI
H4895 57.0 gr 2991 fps 47,300 CUP
IMR 4895 61.0 gr 2980 fps 50,700 PSI
W760 62.0 gr 2973 fps 47,400 CUP
H4831 73.0 gr 3025 fps 45,700 CUP
IMR 4831 73.0 gr 3037 fps 51,300 PSI

Remember, trust NO ONE when it comes to reloading data, always check the data yourself!

I imagine most of the slow-burning pistol powders would do okay. I've used 2400, about 20 grains, in a lot of centerfire .30 cartridges. Raise your sight-in about a foot, at 100 yards. :D

What length would you recommend seating them to? At first, I was thinking that it would be similar to the 150 gr bullets, but the 147s are much longer and more slender.
