I was wondering if anyone knows of a plinking range in Texas, preferably near Dallas?

When I used to live up in Illinois, there was a place I used to go to called Buffalo Range (http://www.buffalorangeshootingpark.com/) they had this plinking range called the Pit that you could throw almost anything into, to shoot (refrigerators, cans, etc) They also allows you to shoot any size gun.

I was hoping we had something like this in Texas, but I have yet to find any place like that.

thanks
Mark

You have to drive to find one. Tom Bean is the only one I know of in the area. (I have never been there, just heard tell of it on ARFCOM.) None of the ranges inside the Metroplex even allow FMJ, much less plinking like you describe.

APG in Greenville has pits that let you do shoot and move stuff. I dont know if they would let you shoot your DVD player though.

Almost all the land in Texas is privately owned.
Because of our sue crazy society now days most land owners won't allow shooters on their land and you can't blame them.

Good luck, man. I can't find a place in the D/FW metroplex that will let me shoot my mil-surps. I could drive up to 100 miles each way, but screw that. The only time I get to do any of this kind of shooting is when I visit my parents in San Antonio...thats a 4 hour drive.

I don't know of any in the DFW area. Most of the outdoor ranges in the metroplex that I have been to, don't even allow FMJ rifle rounds.

I believe these folks allow any kind of ammo or weapon.

I know they allow FMJ and are friendly to EBR's. Mil-Surps welcome.

We're real fortunate to have a great outdoor range here in Paris, TX. With a membership they give you the combination to the lock on the gate and you have free reign of the place. About a quarter of the time I go I'm the only one there.
I was raised in Ft. Worth and me and my buddies used to go walking north of 820 and Beach with our rifles and shoot away when there was nothing but pastures and a big creek there.

I only know of one range like that around DFW and it is a private range with no current membership openings.

There are several ranges that are more open; but none that I know of that will just let you plink at whatever random targets you want to bring. However, I can tell you that a G3 on full-auto absolutely does a number of one of those rolling adjustable office chairs (and just about everything else as well).

There is, or was, an informal (uncontrolled - gasp!) range located in the Sam Houston National Forest.

Although as a poster has stated most land is Texas is privately owned, there are huge tracts of State and Federal lands in Texas in the form of various parks and preserves. Most irritating is that some portions of these could be opened for informal shooting - and hunting in season without "permits" and "fees".

There is a Magnum Sports Center located 4934 Duck Creek Road in Sanger, TX. I think it is still open and that they allow FMJ. Here's their number: 940-458-7000.

Gibson's Outpost on Lawson road in Sunnyvale allows FMJ. Lots of room, up to 200 yard. Tac Pro north of Stephenville is about the only other one I know that will allow FMJ, and they have lots of room too. Both ate nearly 2 hours from me. Pickin's are getting kinda slim in the DFW area for GOOD outdoor ranges.

I thought TX ruled the roost...

when it came to firearm use, carry, CCL, and a long, long tradition of rugged individuality. You guys sound like you're talking about suburban Chicago, or mebbe New York City.

But then, IIUC, TX recently outlawed the BowieKnife, for crying out loud--by how much more could a state repudiate its heritage???

Is it like this all over the great(?) state of Texas??? Horrors!

Well...(yes, it's a pun...)

M2 Carbine--Or hit one of yr fine beef stud bulls, neither, I imagine!

I have visited yr fine state a couple of times--never anywhere else seen so much sky all at once in my life.

Mebbe it was because of my host, but I never had any trouble shooting anywhere--except when the cattle got in the way.

Nope, I don't raise cattle, but the gas well royality checks are nice.:)

I've got a couple ranges on my place and use to let anyone shoot, but since our society has mostly become low life sue crazy parasites I'm very selective about who I let shoot on my property now.

Damn shame but that's how it is now days.:(

Texas is not as gun friendly as people (or the movies) give it credit for. This is part of the reason I want to eventually move to New Mexico or Montana.

It's just that in TX it has gotten to where the metropolitan areas have become so large and they rule. That's where the $$$$ and the votes are.
And that's one reason I had to get out and move to NE TX.
And there is still HUGE, sparsely populated West Texas where things have really not changed much and the cows far outnumber the people.

The Paris Gun Club was great!

Like Parisite, I too used to shoot at the Paris range. Easy access and had a 200 yard range (further than i could shoot anyway).

The things I liked best though was that it was so close to town, you could shoot pistol or rifle there, there was a super skeet/trap/clays club 1/2 mile up the road, and the archery range was only 1/4 up the road. All my toys could get used in the same day!

If I remember right the gun club dues were only $35/year? Tough to beat.

I lift in Nacogdoches now and there is not a range within 60 miles. Bummer.

National forests

You can shoot in any national forest provided it is not a nataonal monument site or any fee entry site. Also if it is a wildlife managment area you need to have a type 2 public hunting permit (for Texas only). The law states that you must not discharge a firearm in a reckless manner and not across a road. Also you can have no permanant structure.
There are 3 national forests in Texas and 5 national wilderness areas. You can do any thing you want in the wilderness areas except use wheeled vehicles and cut trees down. When you leave you leave everything as you found it.
Look at the USDA Forest sevice web site for the locations of the forests. I belive the davy crockett natl forest is clsest to Dallas...Good luck.

I second Parker County Sportsman's Club. In fact, I just submitted my application there. Really nice place. My friend (who is a current member) and I were the only ones shooting there on a weekday, save for a guy on the trap/skeet area for a bit when we arrived. It's $100 per year and that gets you unlimited visits for you, your spouse, and children under 18, and a guest pass. If I read the application correctly, you can bring as many guests as you like as long as only one of them is shooting at a time.

I also would try and avoid Alpine. I personally didn't like it. And as the poster above said, no FMJ and no rapid fire=no fun. There are several indoor ranges in the area, my favorite being Elk Castle just west of Fort Worth off of I-30. They're good people.
