tried the plunk test on my browning hp 9mm.was using 356-125-25 cast bullets.plunked ok on my star b model at 1.125 aol.had to set to 1.090 to plunk in browning.anything longer than that and i can still push in a tad farther but seems like bullet is hitting the rifeling.am i getting to the point of maybe to little room left in the case and to high pressures? thanks
 
What is your powder & charge??

What shape is the bullet??

While you are at it, use a magic-marker and color one of the loads that won't plunk..

Then push it in the chamber and see if it is the bullet or case getting tight.

Is it the 356-125-2R?

This bullet has a vertical section that is full width a long way up the nose. Did you slug your barrel and if so, is the bullet sized to .356? If you seat down an additional 0.035" you will be raising the pressure. You might need to back off on the charge or go for a TC design.
 
bullet size was in first post.4 grns bullseye.havent slugged bbl.yet.checked case in chamber before i put bullet in.it dropped all the way in.
 
i think rsrocket1 was asking for bullet diameter.

are there land marks on your bullet nose?

is the o.d. of the loaded round larger than the o.d. of the sized case?

any lead shavings in the chamber?

is there a shiny ring around the base of the bullet after you push it "a tad bit further"?

four grains of bullseye is at the top of the load chart, but you should have plenty of room left in the case to avoid a compressed charge.

bullets sized to .358.bbl. slugged to .357.checking now with marker to see where lands quit marking pushing round in after it stops on its own.using cases that are flared but go freely all the way in .
 
cases drop in all the way then try to push them on in with no hanging up at 1.077
 
Take an as cast bullet and make arum my round at 1.169" OAL. Tap it into the chamber far enough to get an engraving of the freebore. Tap the bullet out from the muzzle end and measure the freebore. Size the bullets to freebore diameter or .0005" less. Seat those bullets to an OAL where the cartridge chambers under light finger pressure. They don't have to plunk.
 
Sid, your barrel slugs at .357, but that is the groove diameter. The lands are probably .353 or less and if they start very close to the end of the chamber, you may be engraving the bullets that are seated any longer than 1.090". If that's the case, you will need to go to a bullet that "gets narrow" sooner than the ones you are using. Like these:

The only way you'll be able to safely shoot your 356-124-2R bullets in your Browning would be with a charge that does not exceed the pressure limits with that small a volume, meaning less powder and lower velocity (hopefully enough to cycle the action).
 
If you are seating bullet base deep in the case, you could try low bulk powders like W231/HP-38. Even with 125 gr SWC bullets that get seated very deep in the case, no concern for compressing the powder charge.

With more bulkier powders, I cannot use heavier charges for optimal accuracy due to powder compression.
 
dont have w231 or hp-38.will check tomrrow but dont think 4 grns bullseye will give me a compressed load at 1.077.am i alright as long as i dont have a compressed load or should i drop to 3.5 grns. and try that?
 
I think you are good to go at 3.5g Bullseye and slowly work up to maybe 3.8g. Measure your seating depth, if it is .25" or less, you are OK.
 
I load a 125 Lead TC to 1.040" and 3.2 hrs of Bullseye cycles my Glock 17 with the factory spring just fine.

Please use Caps and a space between sentences. Your posts are difficult to read the way they are written.

The correct OAL is dictated by your pistol and barrel. I agree you might have to change powders to be able to load those rounds correctly.

I cast a Lee TL boolit that is very similar to yours.... TL356-124-2R

This bullet also has the 2R (two radius) profile, but appears to tapers faster than your bullet, but I still have to seat them to 1.1" for use in a BHP and they "just" plunk.

I'm using 4.3 gr. of W231 and am not compressing the load.

I use Fed. 100 primers, as I'm shooting the lightest hammer spring Wolff sells and get a light primer strike every couple hundred rounds with WSP primers.

Fed. 100s go bang every time.
