Hey pallies. A recent video on the Soviet PSM pistol (5.45×18mm) got me to thinking about this. Has anyone produced a pocket-ish auto in 5.7×28mm? Google tells me that the answer is a "No". But I thought I'd toss it out there. Thanks!

Thank @Hanzo581. That is what I've found, both before and after posting. I was just curious.

Tangentially, the relatively rare .25 NAA has ballistics pretty damn close.

I think the barrel would be too short to get any decent foot poundage out of it. Heizer tried to make a .223 pocket pistol and basically it's a .22lr with lots of recoil and a massive fireball.

I have always wanted to make a pen gun in 5.7mm though. It would have a 4-5'' barrel, which should give it just enough juice to get the job done. It would be a weapon of last resort that you could use if forced to grapple with someone. I have an idea to basically use a thumb clicker to expose the firing pin, and from that point it would be slam fire. Just hold it in a reverse grip and slam it into the assailant, in the neck, head, or chest. Unfortunately, though, the ATF would frown on that...

I had to look up the .25 NAA, as I had never heard of it before. 23k psi max pressure, 35gr pill, and 1100 fps (assuming that's out of a pocket pistol), making for 125 ft-lbs. Very far removed from 5.7mm. Though if you did fire a 5.7 from a 1'' barrel that's probably about what you would get. Though I also imagine that if you fired a .25 NAA from a 5'' barrel you would only pick up a few hundred fps tops. That's where the 5.7mm really gets its magic is it gains velocity quick to achieve rifle speeds in short barrels. Ballistically, it's closer to a rifle caliber than a pistol one.

I think the "28mm" part probably gets in the way of making a compact pistol. That's a lot of slide travel.

Agreed. It would have to be a derringer to make it more concealable than the alternatives.

I recall an article where one (of the very few) vendors in the 5.7 market said they tried to make a shorter barrel (than the standard 4.8 inches) and it simply wouldn't work (at least in the actual FiveSeveN design - the spring is as short as it can be).
I will have to see if I can dig it up...
Edit: not the article I was looking for, but an interesting thread:

Of course you can make a gun with whatever length barrel you want, the bullet might just plop out in a large-ish fireball though...

That's interesting. I wonder if they can't keep the breech locked long enough with shorter designs in general, or if it's just due to the design of the Five Seven itself. I don't have a good grasp of how the Five Seven operates. I know it's short recoil, but the barrel doesn't tilt.

5.45x18 is like a .22lr besides that it can pierce soft body armor. The Russian PSM is my grail gun since they are so difficult to find in the US.
