Any small pistols, besides the berettas, with "traditional safeties"/ external safties, which make the trigger inop?

I know the kahr's and keltecs are out, anything else that size? I'm thinking the other 380's are the only thing but they're all a little bigger.

I was asking because I've been shooting most of my life, in the military and elsewhere, but only carrying a year. I'm looking for a light reliable gun. Something that's comfortable in the summer.

I'm concerned about the external safety, even though, as soon as I get home my gun goes straight from me to the digital lock box. I have four kids ages 1 through 13. The oldest three have gone shooting with me many times and are allowed to see the guns anytime they ask(to remove the curiosity factor). But because I can't carry at work I don't always leave the house with the gun so there have been a few times I could have carried elsewhere but just forgot to bring a gun. It's that forgetful action that concerns me. I'm concerned that If I can forget to bring the gun, that maybe someday I'll get distracted from placing the gun in the box.

Also I asked my 4 year old if he knew the differance between a real gun and a pretend gun and he did a good job answering with out promting.

So that's it, just wanted to explain my concern.

The California version of the Seecamp and NAA Guardian are supposed to have a safety. Might check the NAA website.

Colt Mustang. I just picked one up used, 98% for $375 locally and it's a fine shooter and has been totally reliable with the 200rds I have fired thus far. Very little recoil and I easily achieved some pratcial accuracy with it.

The mustang is SA and should be carried cocked and locked. It has a manual thumb safety but does not have a grip safety. The thumb safety does not lock the slide but it has a disconnector and Firing Pin Block. IMHO, it's totally safe to carry cocked and locked in a good pocket holster.

It probably weighs at least 20oz loaded but I haven't put it on a scale yet. That's about three times the weight of the Kel-Tec P3AT, a gun of similar OAL height and length (though much slimmer) that is chambered in the same round, .380. However, I much prefer it to the Kel-Tec. The Kel-Tec's always bugged me because it felt like a water pistol, and I say that as a personal who's other handguns are predominately Glocks.

New springs for the Mustang are on the way from Brownells for $16 and I am getting it parkerized locally for $50.00. Metalform brand magazines are $24 each from brownells.

Walther PPK

The Walther PPK has a decocker/safety that disables the trigger in the "on" position. The gun is small and fits in a pocket, but is all steel so might be a bit heavy for some. I think it weighs about 20 ounces.

aeroscout,

I totally agree with Domenic. The Colt Mustang is no longer made, but they are readily available, either used, or some may be out there NIB. I carry one daily as a backup. I have never had any problems with it. IMHO, it is most likely the best small .380 cal weapon I have ever owned. It's too bad Colt stopped manufacturing them.

good luck, and be safe.

Thanks

Thanks for all the great input. I'm going to start looking into some of the larger .380's. How does the Colt mustang compare in size to a compact 1911?

The mustang is much much smaller than a 3" micro 1911. I believe there is a picture on THR somewhere comparing the mustang to the Kel-Tec P3AT. I don't think that there is much difference in height or overall length. but the mustang of course is much thicker and heavier.
