THR has never had a Poe poem. *hint*

*please!*

You asked for it :)

Once upon a weekend weary, while I surfed a forum query
Over a subject of nearly forgotten caliber lore
While I clicked, nearly clacking, suddenly there came a thread
A thread as dead, dead 3 years with replies no more
‘Tis some troll trying to stir up strife’ I muttered ‘nothing more’
Only this and nothing more

Into the thread, my curiosity waning, still the troll I am profaning
Soon I returned to clicking, leaving anti posts for to ignore
I changed the search parameters ‘surely’ said I ‘there is something in the archives to explore’
Let me see then, what post this is, and this mystery explore
‘Tis an anti, and nothing more!’

Open here I flung a thread, with scroll wheel whizzing
A senior member with links of knowledge, making me want more
Not the least malfeasance made he, nor info of his person
Posts in the thousands as sands upon the shore
Perched upon a subject, my subject of caliber lore
Perched and sat and nothing more

Then this learned veteran turned my sad searching into smiling
By the words of wisdom he spoke, of the past, of the war
‘Though thy posts be many, thou’ I said ‘art sure no anti
Willing to take away freedoms, willing to strip the innocents of weapons they bore-
Tell me what caliber it is that I am looking for!’
Quoth the author ‘forty-four’

Then I sat, engaged in thought, wondering with which gun he fought
With which rifle, or pistol he used, and which forty-four
This and more I sat to wonder, trying not to post a blunder
On my monitor’s soft glow leaning in my leather armchair
Not to post a rant, leaning in my leather armchair
A lever gun forty-four!

‘Veteran!’ said I ‘protector of freedom! Veteran still, if male or female
by our liberty, by that God we both adore
Tell this soul with questions plenty, if a wheel gun you used, or a lever long gun
It shall ease a mind from which a fight shall not run
Is the weapon you used a long gun or a wheelie?’
Quoth the author ‘forty-four’

And the author, never telling, still compelling, still compelling
Of the gun he used in the war
And his posts have all the markings of a hero from our shores
And his works have all the seeming of true American dreaming
I do not doubt his selection of size of chamber bore
It will do the job, the forty-four

hmmmmm

not bad.... Now if you can do Homer's Iliad in its entirety and make it gun related.... That would be darned impressive.

Excellent!!

neviander,

Thank you so much!!

"Now, if, in place of the unknown characters, we leave blank spaces, or substitute dots, we read thus:

the tree thr...h the,
- The Gold-Bug; Edgar Allan Poe

I'm more of a Gilgamesh fan m'self .....you know.. untnampishtum and stuff....

Very creative and thank you for sharing!

great job! but poe was no Dr Suess.....

I like Poe, so after reading the Dr. Suess poem, I wanted to be see something set to The Raven by Poe.

I also like Kipling's works , one example is his The Female Of The Species

Sometimes one needs to be selfish so they can share.
I was being selfish with what I wanted to read, so our talented members could share with us all.

Cmdr. Gravez0r,

Shouldn't that be "Never let it be said that we gunnies are an illiterate bunch"?
;)

Bravo!

I saw the reference too on the Seuss thread, and looked up "The Raven" as well, but didn't have time to reword it - glad you did!

neviander,

Bravo!

If I'm crazy about your poem, would that make me a Raven lunatic?

IF (When?)

If you can clear a jam when those about you
Are having none and blaming it on Colt
If you can trust your tinkering when Glock men doubt you,

But remind yourself they ken the dark side;
If you can wait for a Smith to finish, but not be tired by waiting,
Or having your Defender dissed, but don't diss the nines-
Or being rated, don't give in to hate threads,
And don't look like an expensive gun guy, or know it all guys:

If you can afford a Baer, but not make it a Safe Queen:
If you can argue with an anti, and not make arguing your aim;
If you can love the Duke, and Eastwood too,
And never dither about cinematic gratuitous violence;
If you can bear the wisdom and truth you have spoken
Twisted by others to make advice for noobs;
Or watch the piece you carried half your life be broken,
And wondernines and nickle-plated sissy pistols hailed as jewels:

If you can clean out your safe to trade for a Wilson Combat
Knowing they don't get any cheaper, and the deal must be done now,
And arrive at the gunshop to find it sold to your best friend,
But go home with a really sweet deal on a new Glock 20,
If you can find the strength to install your own Beavertail,
and emboldened, do the trigger job and thumb safety as well,
If you can cut a Novak dovetail, and the sights are still bang on!

If you can post with quiet dignity, never flaming, never coarse,
Or suss out the anti poser; and rebuke without remorse...
If your thread is cut, but lauded, and you take it like a man,
Though in your heart you're feeling no one really understands
The Duke will hear from heaven, as he pauses to reload;
And declare by Moses Browning; Son, you've got to be High Road.
A Firefly quote is all you need; to smile and carry on;
Concealed of course, but in due course, you'll be a man my son!

With deepest apologies to Kipling...
Stop me before I rhyme again: "Im walkin' death and destruction..."

neviander,

That's easy. "High Road" has the same number of syllables and the same stress pattern as "forum". Change "forum" to "High Road" in the first line, and you've got it.

True, but that first line has that perfect iambic pentameter ring to it...I'll think about it.
