Ok, simple question, does the point of impact vary greatly between FMJ vs. HP?

I don't go to the range as much as I used to as we have children now and money is tight. But when I go, I feel obligated to shoot only HP to know POI. I have no concerns with testing reliable cycling, as I've put a few hundered HP through all guns I'm concerned with, but the POI is my biggest concern.

I could shoot more with FMJ, but in the back of my head I always wonder.

At typical handgun fighting ranges (10 or 15 yards at most), I've never found any practical difference in POA/POI between different bullet styles, assuming the same weight. There may be a difference at longer ranges.

You are aiming for Minute-of-torso in defensive use. COM is all you need to hit (even head shots within 5-20 yards would not be significantly different between FMJ & JHPs.)

Go ahead and practice with FMJs, as long as you shoot-up your carry magazine of JHPs at least every quarter.

Same bullet weight and velocity should make no difference unless you're shooting a couple of hundred yards.

all I know is when I shot the mag of .45acp JHP (WWB) I had in my gun I put 4 into the center and 5 around it (nice grouping) then I reloaded the same mag with FMJ (UMC) and I was all over the place. Next mag was better but not a good as the first.

Sometimes JHP is more accurate than FMJ, due to better uniformity of the bullet base. A HP jacket is formed over the base first, while a FMJ's is formed over the nose first, leaving rolled jacket edges and exposed lead on the base. It is also possible that the particular FMJ load you used may be less accurate in that gun than most.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking because out of the 4 different brands I've tried (3fmj) 1 shot decent but none were as good as the JHP.
