Why? FMJ vs HP results

Guys, I think you are missing my point. Someone buys an inexpensive handgun and then they think it MUST do 1/2" groups or there is something wrong. Will the bad guy be insulted because he was shot with a gun that only does 1.5" groups instead if .5" groups. Heck, offhand 1.5" is a good gun IMO. I don't think the OP is talking about competition but of course I could be wrong.

You are dealing with to many variables. But unless the gun is locked in a Ransom rest you are just grasping at straws. Different bullets different COL, different powders. shooters ability?? Who knows???

What is accuracy at 7 yards? Then you shoot at 25 yards?.No offense but that's a whole different ball game, Just the shooter can make that big difference at 25 yards.

All,

Great to see the topic got picked back up.

My real concern is that it seemed odd that there was such a disparity from 7-10yds out at 25yds from using FMJ and HP.

I did use a bench rest for my pistol to attempt to duplicate the shots without me being the cause of the change.

Yes i know that my accuracy at 25 is not as great as 10yds. But the difference between the the two types of ammo was too great. I am not planning on competing with this, just a range gun, but was concerned with how great of a disparity there was.

The Plated HP still hold tight where as the FMJ went wild.

Tanks for all the input, it will keep me guessing, i still have not figured out why.

This is an interesting thread since it seems that the bad grouping is not shooter induced. I don't have that much reloading experience, but hopefully by asking the right questions we can get one of the experienced reloaders to help solve the problem.

You indicate the grouping is good at 10 yards, but at 25 yards it is really bad for the FMJ but still good for the plated. What does the grouping look like at 15 yards? What FMJ bullets are you using and can you share the load information for one of the powders that you tested? When you say you have a bad grouping, are they grouped high, low, or all over the place?
