POI/POA windage descrepancy

Has anyone ever tried the technique of clamping the barrel in a vice, sticking a chunk of wood through the cylinder window, and tweaking the barrel in order to move the front sight windage wise? I'm sort of afraid to try this, but I've read about it in 'zines.

Yeah, I tried it on a Ruger Vaquero once. The barrel rotated while I was torqueing the frame and I knocked the front sight off.

You might want to avoid that possibility when you set it up.

I think I'm going to avoid it, anyway. I've figured out a sight hold technique that works at all ranges. It's a 58 Remmy Pietta. Problem is, it's pretty far off to the left with the conversion cylinder, Just a little to the left with ball and the cap and ball cylinder, and dead on windage and a little high (though half as accurate) with 220 conical out of the cap and ball cylinder. So, well, if I adjust for the conversion, I screw up the cap and ball cylinders. Too, if I tweak the thing too far over, I fear the ram under the barrel won't lock into the catch at the end of the barrel.

I remember reading an article on tweakin gthe gun for windage that way. The Remmy has flats for the vice to grip on the octagon barrel. Hadn't though of the sight betting hurt.

Meh, I'll keep it as is. It's fun to shoot even with a funky sight picture. It ain't the only gun i have for which I have a modified sight picture.

You could search around for a gunsmith to have a dovetailed front sight cut in. Some Uberti 58' Remingtons have it installed stock from the factory.

The Colt can be adjusted for elevation and windage by re-cutting the hammer sight either to the left or right and deeper.

Here I screwed up and re-cut the hammer sight "V" notch to the right as she was shooting to the left with my initial loading and I cut the 'V' notch way to far to the right;

Here I JB Welded up the 'V' notch and re-cut it to the left some;

But, that's the Colt, which ain't helping you much. I now have a completely screwed up hammer with JB Weld all over the place but I purchased a spare hammer and after I get this right I'll just file cut the 'V' notch where its suppose to be in the new hammer.

You can install a dove-tailed front sight by cutting the dove-tail yourself using a hacksaw and a triangular file to cut the dove-tail. If you make it a very shallow one, you can do it all with a triangular file with one side ground smooth. Front sights can be bought at TOTW.

It's best to practice on a junky barrel or a scrap steel bar first.

I had the front sight on a snubby revolver dove tailed. That's an ideal. It worked out well on that snubby, though i mainly wanted it to replace the shiny stainless one, not really for windage adjustment, but it'd work for that.

And with that big a$$ barrel on your Remmy, just a bit to the right or left on the front sight should solve the problem.
