POI Quick Question??

I took my new to me Smith & Wesson Md. 14 with a 6" barrel to the range today to set the sights. At 25 I was getting great grouops (2-1/2") but all the groups were hitting about 2" high. The rear sight is as low as it will go. Which way do I need to adjust my powder load to lower the POI? My load is 38 Spl., 3.5 grs of W231, a CCI sp primer and the bullet is a 148 gr.DEWC. IIRC I think I need to raise the powder charge. Am I right? Thanks for the suggestions. These loads were chorographed at a avg. of 730 fps.

Maybe a heavier bullet might work better.

what is a "Quk" try the 158grain. I believe that the sights are set up for that. maybe some more powder to get to 800fps also

That should bring it down. A faster powder and more velocity will bring it down for sure.

My Model 14 never seemed to like 158 Gr bullets, although it would shoot 148 Gr WC's great. It also shoots 125's and 140's real well.

The model 14 is a classic bullseye revolver, they should work best if using a standard 6 o'clock target POA hold on an official NRA 25 or 50 yd bullseye target and should actually give you some elevation room on the rear sight. If trying to hold POI with the sight it will probably be high even at the bottom.

As far as ammo goes, lighter bullets and higher velocity print lower than heaveir and slower bullets. As such your DEWC with 3.5grs of W231 should shoot lower than the typical target HBWC load of 3.1grs.

I am shooting 148 WC. The first time I went out I shot 158 gr. LRNFP and the gun didn't like them.

I'll try more powder. I'll some loads at 3.7,3.9 and 4.1. I'll try some Clays, Unique and Titegroup also.

Instead of more, try less.

The old 148 grain wadcutter load was 2.7 bullseye for about 750 FPS.

You are already pushing them past that.

Last night I loaded up 12 different loads of different powder and charge weights. I went to the range with my chronograph today. The difference in POI was amazing. I founsd a load of 3.7 grs. of W231 put he POI the same as POA. The powders I tested were W231, Titegroup, Clays and Unique. W231 performed the best and Unique did the worst. With Unique I was having a hard time just keeping it on on the target at 25 yards. The W231 load of 3.7 gave me a group of 2" @ 750 fps. All shots were shot off sandbags. The other thing that surprised me was the loads with the lowest Extreme Spread and Standard Divation was not the most accurate.
