I am sure this has been discussed before but I am still waking up and not finding it. Has anyone tried using pointed bullets in .30 Carbine to get a little more range and flatter shooting out of the old war horse? Even this 100 grain short jacket bullet from Hornady ought to be an improvement in both trajectory and stopping power. I have always liked the gun and wondered why there aren't other guns chambered in the cartridge. Cheers, Matthew

I've shot a lot of those 110 gr SJ and like them. I've had no feeding problems and accuracy is pretty good. I did some gel testing with them at various distances out to 100 yards. They expand very well and should do pretty good at stopping the target.

I haven't tried any of the more "pointed" .30 cal bullets. I think you would have a problem with them fitting into the magazine. If you wanted to hand load single rounds into the chamber I'm sure you would get some interesting results but for me that would make a semi-automatic rifle fairly pointless.

The problem is OAL to fit in the magazine, If you had a contender barrel you could but your really not gonna gain much you really need to get out a ways (200-300 yards) before the BC is gonna retain significantly more velocity.

Taking this in another direction, what about using 85-90 grain .308 cal pistol bullets? Presumably that would provide flatter shooting and better expansion at short distances, but it would make drop and energy loss worse at longer ranges. Anybody tried that? Thanks.

Haven't considered it but I did load some 110's in .30-06. Chrono'd @ 3400 FPS.

I have used bullets similar to that (JHP) and used lighter FMJ bullets. I don't recall having any problems. I don't have any experience with a pointed bullet.

I played with the short jackets in 30-06 and I got better accurracy from RN 30 carbine bullets. I was shooting reduced loads.

Short Jackets expand pretty rapidly and uncontrollably. Good groundhog bullets, but not so good for hunting anything a lot bigger.

Thanks, all. 4thPointOfContact, those sabots are neat and would provide some interesting options, but I wonder if they could really be made to function reliably in an M1 Carbine. Anyone tried it?

Remington used them in factory ammo for 30-06 and 30-30 with 55gr bullets. Idea was flatter shoooitng varmint round, but they tended to not shoot as accurrately as light weight, pointed .30 cal bullets like 130gr spitzer.

Would be interesting in a carbine, I'm not sure what it gets you in practical use.
