I recently bought some .223 ammo that I assumed were fmj, but are actually pointed soft points. I've never seen PSP. What is it for? I'm debating wether to take them back, or keep them, but I'm not sure if I have a use for them.

Hunting.
soft points expand in tissue, generally, and i know in some areas fmj is illegal to hunt with. Psp from a rifle also easier on steel targets than fmj

I know that soft points are for hunting, but is there a particular niche pointed soft points fill?

They are soft points so they expand.

They are pointed so they have a better ballistic coefficient and retain velocity to greater distance

If you are asking what you can hunt with them.....

coyote, hogs, varmints

As I already said though....they will work perfectly fine for punching paper too. FMJ are generally cheaper though

As mentioned before they are for hunting.
I don't know of one place that will let you return ammo.
Sell it here on the forum if you don't want it because ten other guys will be wanting it.

Bolt gun or autoloader?

PSPs get damaged in autoloaders pretty frequently while making it from the magazine into the chamber. Sometimes bad enough to stub and cause a stoppage.

The only jam I've ever had with the SCAR was from some Winchester PSPs. OTOH, they would't work in any rifle I tried them in either.

PSP pointed soft points. as oposed to flat point soft points or round nose soft points. they are pointed so they are more aerodynamic. simple really.

they make great self defense rounds... good enough to keep a box anyways... or you could take up hunting of course.
