My Police Surplus 870 now has one coat of Tru-Oil
I dilute the Tru-Oil 50/50 with mineral spirits.
(Only need about 9 more coats)
More Pictures when it's done.
(BTW not sure how to clean up the pump handle before refinishing)

Get some Formby's Refinisher (or one of the generic equivalents next to it on the shelf) - I have used it for over 40 years with excellent results. Apply it with fine steel wool (I used 0000 unless the wood is trashed & then a coarser grade) and it will remove the goo & smooth it out a bit. Many times I don't need to stain, and sometimes I don't apply anything afterward. I tend to lean toward pure tung oil, but with a nice piece of wood I might use Lin-Speed or Tru-Oil. I used it to refinish my old Win 97 and finished with tung oil & it looks great.
