I started a thread in the General Handgun section but only got one reply that gave me the web site of a place I have already searched. I think the reason I only received one reply is because I did not use the right title to the thread so I am trying again here.

At various gun shows I have seen where firearms that were confiscated by police had the receivers chopped in two and then the rest bagged up and sold for parts. Does anyone know of a company that buys and sells these chopped up firearms. I am looking for a specific part.

Thanks.

If you are looking for specific parts for any gun, look at numrich's first. I don't know where they get their parts. But, they have parts for guns that aren't even in production anymore:

http://www.e-gunparts.com/

All firearms confiscated by the Birmingham(Al)P.D. slated for destruction are sent to ACIPCO to be melted whole, there are no left over parts. I wish folks that sold their junk guns at "gun buybacks" would sell them to Numrich (e-gunparts) that way there would be more used parts available.

Most of the places that I have seen selling the confiscations that have been chopped sell them as parts kits. Numrich is your best bet for individual parts.

As an FYI, if you call their toll free number, select "place an order" and before an operator picks up, you will be given a code for free shipping that you can use if you hang-up and place the order online :)

Sorry but IMO, selling seized property for profit in this manner is criminal. I'd be willing to bet a few of those guns were illegally or improperly seized and now the department is basically committing theft from the law biding citizens and profiting by fencing the loot.

I would rather see the seized property sold (as has been 'tradition') than destroyed. This way, the items can retain some useful purpose (more useful than being made into manhole covers) and the PD can get money to buy equipment (less taxpayer burden). While some cases may slip through the cracks, I believe that there is sufficient legislative and judicial mechanisms in place to prevent wholesale abuses. Usually, LEAs can not destroy seixed property until after the case is adjudicated (usually in the states favor). [Did you see that case where an acquital caused a judge had tro order to Police to return known MJ to a defendant] If proeprty is wrongfully taken or retained, by the PD, the rightful owner can file a civil suit to get it back, as long as it is done in a timely manner.

mp510 - That is a realistic answer.

Here is my Idealistic answer: The problem is our government on all levels is taking an "If there is an exemption its not really a burden on the right" attitude to our rights. So if the person who has been wrongly dispossesed can somehow navigate a legal system, to whose benifit it is now working counter to..... They might get their stuff back....... Don't like it!

This lowely serf has a problem with the kings attitude.;)

It would help if we knew what particular part(s) you are looking for. Generally, stripping out usuable parts from guns that have been, or are slated to be destroyed and selling them together is limited to a few makes and models. Otherwise the recovered parts are sold individually. You also need to be sure that any parts you get will fit in your gun.

Recently I watched an auction were two lots consisted of a revolver frame and a bag of parts. They sold for around $125 (plus auction house fees, shipping, FFL costs, etc.). I'm sure the buyers thought they could put the parts together and make a complete gun. The problem is that the parts that were bagged and went with the frame, weren't the right ones to fit that paticular frame. :uhoh:

I am looking for a spare ruger blackhawk cylinder in 45acp. I have checked Numrich several times and they never list any cylinders for rugers.

Ruger generally if not always requires that a customer who whats an additional cylinder return the whole revolver to the factory so they can insure a correct fit. Occasionally you will see a .45 ACP cylinder for sale, but these are ones that were installed in another gun - and they may or may not fit the one you have. It is sometimes possible to have such a cylinder fitted to a second revolver by installing a new hub, but this can be expensive. Use care, because of what you might be getting involved in.

I have that Ruger cylinder that I found at a gunshow years ago. It's been used on 3 different Rugers since.

It might be easier to buy a Ruger Convertible that has the cylinder included than trying to find one by itself.

Murray State College Gunsmithing department Tishomingo, Oklahoma....

the confiscated guns get turned over to students to destroy the recievers and sell the parts for the schools underfunded gunsmithing program/club.....the departments get no money....
and the prices are very reasonable
