Police in NY Demand Facebook Profile and PASSWORD When Applying For Permit

All I hear is how pro 2nd the police are but I do not see it. I saw a video of a debate in Albany on the senate floor about the SAFE act and the head Democrat said the state police helped write the bill this is their bill and it is for them because they face assault weapons every day???

I told my wife when she signed up for Facebook that one day the government would use it to spy on her. Unfortunately Facebook is well known to build data profiles of their participants that include information about their family and friends. So they spy on "ME" through her and I really detest that. I am not about to reveal my true identity to a world full of kooks. It's already too easy to find someone and get every bit of info about them. Privacy was something we valued as hillbillies. We knew that if you had a good thing going and you said something about it to anyone that soon everyone in the area would try to horn in on what you had going. I've seen it many times. For example my dad knew the janitor at the local grade school. He told us just what it would take to get access to the school gym after hours for games of basketball against our friends. It wasn't long before there was 200 people showing up every night. They shut it down and about a year later we started playing again (a pint of good whiskey goes a long way with some people and dad wanted us to be basketball players). We tried hard to keep it secret that time. It took longer but again the place became crowded too soon. We actually got to play there for a couple of years like that. My older brothers formed a team of sorts and soon there were teams from all over. My brothers never lost a single game including the one they played against the high school team from the area which had a record of maybe 22-5 at the time. But the school finally said we were burning too much electricity. Again we waited a year and came back. That time we said nothing to no one except another group of brothers that became our full time competition. I learned a lot about basketball and I learned it's best to keep things private too.

I've had idiots on the net threaten me and they meant it too. One idolized school shooters. Another was a well known thug from the area I lived in. He threatened me many times. Why did he hate me so much? Because I wouldn't say AOL's satellite internet was bad. The world is full of loons. That nut tried hard to find out where I lived.

Telling the world what you think and exactly who you are may not be the best thing to do IMO. If it's just you that's one thing. But I had a family to worry about. So now you won't see my real name on anything on the net. I've had too many bad experiences. I won't give any passwords to the government either. There comes a time when enough is enough.

You need to get FACEBOOK now! Makes it easier for the government to monitor you and protect you.

Sorry, unless the OP got the letter himself I say BS.
Someone must have gotten creative.

IF the OP got it himself then that seems to be a lawsuit in the making which is why I say BS.

Soylent Green is PEOPLE!!!!!

My "hmm..." meter went off on this whole thing but nothing surprises me anymore. BTW they are mixing human genes with all sorts of animals that may someday end up on your plate. SG may be closer than you think!

How about a human/pig hybrid? Not science fiction any more.

Interesting how this would fly with the holding and dicta in Riley v. California, the Supreme Court case that says that police generally need a warrant to search a suspect's/arrestee's cell phone. A worthwhile read. Read it together with the recent line of 2A cases. I think there's a decent chance the High Court would strike down the FB prerequisite if it ever got that far.

I used to get regular threats in usenet, mostly from neo-Nazis who didn't like my reminding people of the LONG and storied history of pedophilia in the "White nationalist" movement.

When they started posting what were purported to be maps to my home, I simply asked:

"You think you know where I live, why aren't you here yet? Too stupid to follow your own directions, or just too SCARED?"

It's been over ten years with no takers.

I'm sure the fact that they knew I had more loaded AR magazines and Garand clips than they had branches in their collective family trees had NOTHING whatever to do with that...

I dont use or have a facebook account or any social media account for that matter. IF I lived there they would deny my permit on this basis alone? Between New York and Obama communism is getting much stronger in this country!!!

I can't believe this got to 28 responses before someone called hoax. That was my first thought, and I'd have offered it sooner if our new filters at work didn't block THR.

If you use the police computers to do as they request there is no reason their system cant record your user name and password. After you are done with their
snooping go home and change your password.

That is if any of the story is true.

Several folks are have referenced "if the story is true."

The news item is being picked up by several resources, some of which are doing their own research and verification. Mostly by "fringe" media, but Time Warner Cable News also took a look and called the local PD themselves. According to a statement by the PD: "A statement from the police department acknowledged the form had been included in past applications."

At the same time, the PD emailed Time Warner that "Social media is a vital investigative tool and we make use of it in background investigations, to render a well-founded and complete recommendation on applicants for the courts. None of the eight applicants who supplied Facebook information have had their accounts accessed."

What is interesting is that the press contacted the chief of police and the mayors office, and they are literally saying they just don't want to talk about it. Hopefully local voters will make them talk about it when elections roll around for the Mayor and the city's two councilmen.

I asked nyfirearms.com if this story was real, they said yes it was real

http://nyfirearms.com/forums/pistol...rvliet-ny-requiring-facebook-id-password.html

"Is there any truth that Watervliet, NY is requiring Facebook ID and Password to get a Permit?"

Answer

"Six page thread at the top of this forum. The answer is yes."

I read this and recall a time when certain public officials were tarred and feathered. What was even more scary was the link to Cuomo's proposed SAFE Act Two at the bottom. I'm also seeing lots of anti-gun ads prior to election.

PIN#.......is that the Personal Identification Number Number? I heard those are issued by the Department of the Redundancy Department.

You need a Personal Identification Number Number to access money in the Automatic Teller Machine Machine.
