DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A Daytona Beach police officer shot and killed a man Monday for assaulting him with a rock. Eyewitnesses say the man went crazy and he started hitting the officer in the head.
The man was shot on a very public area of the beach. A man, who was pretending he had a gun, ends up on the wrong end of a real one.
The strange man was first found sitting in a landscaping truck. But he didn't work for the company. When workers asked him to leave, he assaulted them verbally, then physically, punching one man in the head.
The workers say he also had some sort of object under his shirt that he said was a gun. But they couldn't be sure, so they took no chances.
The owner of the landscaping truck says he was obviously mentally disturbed and things only got worse when Officer Manuel Perez arrived.
We're told that the suspect immediately attacked the officer with a large rock, hitting him on or around the head several times. Then the officer fired a single shot, killing the man.
By attacking an officer so viciously, the department says Officer Perez used his last resort. He was not carrying a tazer.
The man has not been identified, but police will tell us he has been charged in the past with attempted murder and assaulting a police officer.
Meanwhile, Officer Manuel Perez will be placed on administrative leave until FDLE makes their determination whether this shooting was justified.
