Recently purchased a used mossberg, model designation 500 ATP. It appears to be constructed of stainless and aluminum, heavy constructed barrel, metal trigger group assembly, and standard magazine length (5+1). On the side is stamped "Surete Du Police Quebec" ,below that "C.A.I. Georgia VT." . It came with a synthetic forend and pistol grip (appears that it used to be a folding stock). Externally battered, internally, after a quick tear down and cleaning, the parts are barely used. Can someone tell me what exactly I have here? I've searched everywhere, but don't know what the ATP stands for and whether this is a stainless gun or not. Was this a military weapon? I ask because I'e always heard that only the Military mossberg's came with metal trigger group assembly. Appreciate any light anyone can shed on this.

Thanks

Probably Marinecoat rather than stainless. I had a marinecoat 500 that a lot of folks thought was blasted stainless.

Maybe Mossberg put the metal triggerguards on the ATPs, this isn't the first I've heard of them, I've seem them at online auction sites and the only appearent difference was the triggerguard, which looked to be metal.

Its not just the military guns that come with the metal triggergaurds and safeties, anyone can order the 590A1, its just more expensive than the same 590 with the plastic parts. If I'm not mistaken the 500 and 590 trigger housings are also interchangable, so one could replace the plastic one on a 500 with a metal one for a 590 if he wished, I think I've seen it recomended.

Thank you Zach ,I guess I will wait and see if the bad dings in the barrel rust. I picked it up to use as a HD gun, decided to set aside my plain jane 500 in case I get a chnce to shoot clay pigeons. This will be a project gun, ordered hogue over-molded stock set and planning to install hi-viz front sight and see if i can rig a light to the front as well.
