This may be the stupidest question I have asked in some time, but my stupidity knows no bounds! :D

I have a Ruger New Vaquero SAA in polished stainless. I went with stainless over nickel so I don't have to worry about it cracking or pealing. The only thing I don't like about the stainless is its not as "pretty" (shiny) as nickel. A nickel plated SAA is one sexy looking firearm IMHO. The polished stainless on the Ruger is very dull in comparison. So I guess my questions are:

Is there a way (or a place) to polish the already polished stainless to get it looking like its nickel-plated?

Will this harm the pistol or stainless steel?

Is there any downside to doing it?

someone will correct me if im wrong but i dont think ruger offered the vaquero in nickel plated to begin with. At least thats what I was told when I bought my stainless vaquero. Doesnt really answer your question though so i guess im no help :D

You're right they don't. ;)

If I had wanted a nickel plated SAA. I would have had to get a different brand like a Uberti... Since I decided on stainless, I was able to go with the Ruger. Now I'm just wondering if I can "slick it up" a little...

You Will Need A Buffing Wheel And Some Polishing Compound. Or Lots Of Rubbing By Hand And A Tube Of Simichrome, Maas, Flitz, What Ever Turns You On. It Will Never Be As Shiny As A Nickle Gun, But It Can Be Shined Up Pretty Good. Take A Good Look At A Smith And Wesson Mod 686. That Is What You Can Expect If You Do The Work. But, If You Get The Polishing Compund Inside The Mechanicals, And You Probably Will, You May End Up Taking The Gun To The Gunsmith For A Complete Teardown And Cleaning Before You Can Use It Again.

An SAA is a Colt, not a Ruger or Uberti. That is a name of an actual gun model, not a generic term. :)

Good advice........:banghead:

The quickest way known to man to ruin a nice firearm.......

Yeah... Its just one of those things... Like all tissues are Kleenex, all photo copies are a Xerox, and any soft drink (around here) is a Coke.

Ohhhhhh - I get it. All cars are Yugos, too. Right?

Thanks for the help everyone... Lots of good info and food for thought.

BigG... Never mind...

I'm not going to be lured into a childish argument because some anal-retentive "gentleman" wants to troll the boards. Have a nice day!

You may have to go to US Firearms to get a nickle plated psuedo similar Single Action Army. I guess since it is made in the same building, they can call it what they want?

I polished my OLD Ruger Vaquero Single Action Six Gun Similar to a SAA with jewelers rouge and a buffing wheel. It came out nice but will not hold that gloss with use.

It is an excersice worth pursuing, kind of a bonding experience.

If you really want to bring out the shine in stainless, do a finial polish with green chrome rouge. It will get rid of any milkiness left by superfine polishes.

If you want to keep corners sharp and get the best polish, you'll need hard felt wheels - and they aren't cheap. Check out knife makers supplies. They will have everything you need.

Just get some Mothers Mag Polish and some clean cotton rags and have at it. You won't have to worry about any extra equipment or getting a little carried away with the buffer. You supply the power and Mothers Mag Polish will do the rest. It may take a while but you'll be very pleased with the results of your manual labor.
