Anyone one else feel the polychoke is hideous   . I do, but, and I don't know why I kinda like it. Maybe it's the fact that most of the old-timers shotguns I grew up around have them. I aslo like the fact that they shorten your barrel to whatever lenght for you when you have it install. I have a spare 28" barrel for my 870, that I'm iching to have it put on (the poly-choke with the compensator). Anyone have any experiences with them. Talk me
out of it.

I think that they are as ugly as home made sin. But an old gun with a full choke, have it bored to what you want.

I have one on my HD 870 (the one I intend to use for 3-gun). It was on the new bbl I bought for $35 yrs ago...needed a new bbl cuz a previous owner had crudely shortened the original. Never intended to enter it in a beauty contest. I can live with it.

Better be careful. People will start calling shotguns that have them Assault shot guns.

Polychokes and the Cutts - do have character. :D

You need a Cutts, something about shooting one and the noise resonates off the High/ Low house to the rest of the squad. Duck Blinds too.

Polychokes - well as I have typed before - Doesn't mean squat what a bbl , choke, or setting "says" - the pattern board will define it.

There is something about Poly's and Cutt's that are sentimental, classic, and reminders of a time gone by.

"Hey- you got a turd on the end of that bbl" .

"Ye-Ouch- that sucker kinda stings the ears".

Not that anyone "I" know would actually compete with one at Skeet, or use one in a Duck Blind. ;)

I have a Poly-Choke early 1950's model on a Ithaca Mod 37R 16 gauge (it took alot away from it's value). At first I couldn't stand the look of it, even made fun of it until I fired the shotgun and man does that baby pattern beautifully! It's now my most trusted/carried shotgun for small game and birds. It did not hurt the balance or swinging characteristics as some have stated.

I myself wouldn't install one on a modern day removeable choked shotgun, but if I had an old beater with a fixed choke that I wanted to be more versatile and shoot on a regular basis I wouldn't hesitate to install one.

I'm now a firm believer in Poly-Chokes. They work, and they work well.

Few folks stay neutral on Polys. Some loathe them, others regard them as close to perfect.

Some were installed less than concentric to the bore. POA and POI fall into different zip codes when this happens.

They turn up on lots of old repeaters, including old Model 12s, 97s and A-5s.

I find the "Big onion on the muzzle" a bit distracting. Those with better focus may not.

As stated, the markings are just wishful thinking and educated guesses. Patterning is even more in order than with other shotguns.

NOTE: Forster style slugs swage down nicely through these even when they're screwed down tight. Sabots may not, and just like the old solid round "Punkin Balls" may bust off the "Petals". If using slugs, best accuracy will PROBABLY be at an open setting.

I have used them, I kinda like them. I think it is good idea, especially if you have an older fixed tube and want to tune the barrel to a round.

First day I ever deer hunted in my life, I didn't have a shotgun to use. One of my friends loaned me a 16 gauge bolt action with a PolyChoke. We were wise enough to test fire. Each of us hit a pop can at 30 yards first shot.

Later the next day, I got an 11 pointer, 213# field dressed at about 60 yards

Poly choke was the interchangeable choke before interchangeable chokes

Polly/Cutts

When the feds mandated steel shot the only non full choke gun I had was a mod. 12 with polly choke. My hunting partner was in the same boat and reverted back to an old auto with cutts compensator. They work fine now just like they did 50 years ago. Seems like the only ones that worry about the looks are the younger hunters that spot us walking out. If they're snickering they're doing it behind our back

Sorry to revive an old thread, but hey, at least I searched before I posted somthing new :p

Anyway, has anyone tried the new polychokes After lots of searching, I have discovered that my dream barrel doesn't exsist (18 inch, rem-choke, 3.5 inch chamber) for my 870 super mag. I am OK with the looks of a polychoke, but am wondering if one would be a good alternative on my exsisting barrel if I have it cut down.
