Finally had time to sit down and clean the 3 guns I've been shooting these past two weeks. I must say the inventor of the polygonal barrels is a genius.
Both the H&K P7M8 and USP 40 barrels only took 6 patches each and a few strokes from the bronze brush to become mirror bright again.
While the CZ-75B barrel used up a stack of patches and still showed some caked on carbon in the barrel grooves.

So here's my question. Are there any other handguns with polygonal barrels aside form H&K, Kahr, maybe Glock?

Magnum Research Desert Eagle and (IIRC) Baby Desert Eagle/Jerico

The Glocks aren't truly polygonal but close enough I guess.

GLOCKS aren't truly polygonal?!

The inventor [of the poly barrels] is a genius unless you're shooting lead, and the bullets aren't well matched to the bore -- then you've got a lot of mess and some safety issues.

One acquaintance, a pro who teaches and shoots for a living, shoots nothing but lead in his Glocks; he says the secret is getting the bullet size right.

Too small and the gases melt more lead than is good -- leading to leading.

[Always wanted to write that sentence...<grin>]

Never seen this before,

This is the first time I've ever seen polygonal barrels. I had never even heard the term before...I can see there is an obvious benifit when it comes to longevity, but what other benifits are there to these interesting barrels? Obviously easier to clean right? More/less accurate? how about rigidity, more/less?
Any good sources to read up on poly barrels?

(intrigued)
Matt

Here are some barrels for you.

BarrelriflingTypesBullets.gif

Can you guess the guns?

Here are the clues:

A = .25 pistol, conventional rifling
B = .357 mag revolver, conventional rifling
C = 9mmP pistol, polygonal rifling

And I have included pics of some bullets fired through those barrels so you can see the appearance of the rifling impressions.

@ AJAX22

No sir, there are no S&Ws in that picture.

If nobody guesses in the next three replies I will tell you what they are...

Poly rifling...

Please sir, may I have another. My HK USP 45 is more accurate than most guns with regular rifling and crono results show an average of 50FPS faster with 230gr and 75-100FPS faster with 185’s. Combine that with the fact that cleaning is easier and barrel life is longer, and you have a winner. I’m with you on this one. Poly is great. I wish that someone would make a Poly rifled barrel for the 1911.

It’s just my opinion

Well, Glock "forgot" to support their bbls at the 6 o'clock position in 40 cal-10mm. If you're shooting one of those with lead, please move an extra lane or two over at the shooting range. :D

B is Taurus

@ All

Could somebody please post a pic of their Glock rifling 'cos I am curious...
