I picked this one up from a friend about two weeks ago. I didn't know much about it and had to do some homework.

Portuguese M1904 39 Mauser Vergueiro Short Rifle in 8 x 57 mm. 1939 conversion of the 6.5 mm. M1904 rifle, to supplement the Armys m 937 Short Rifles. The Mauser-Vergueiro is a hybrid Mannlicher receiver and Mauser magazine. The Vergueiro bolt is a unique design, totally different than any other military rifle. The bolt-action is silky smooth, compared to a Mauser 98. Made by DWM, in Germany, 1904 1908.

All the numbers I have found are matching. I like this little rifle and hope to be able to make it to the range with is pretty soon.

It has a nice crest of King Juan Carlos.

The stock was replaced at one time but is stamped with the matching SN# below the rear sling swivel.

It's pretty easy getting the bolt apart, the true test is getting it back together. In fact, there ought to be some sort of award, a lapel pin or something, to mark the accomplishment.
The striker assembly will fly out one end of the body and the bolthead out the other if you get it wrong----don't do it near the good china.
Hint: Use a padded vise to hold the bolt body while you pit yourself against this beast.
(The last time I read instructions for this operation, the instructions were wrong.)

Isn't that one of the "field expedient" type conversions used by Germany when they couldn't produce enough 98 Mausers? Sort of like the 95 type Mausers, Carcano, and a couple of other self destructing designs.

mines a little rougher than yours but its still a good shooter.

i also have a golden state trailmaster sporter. its based on the portuguese verguiero 1904 but in .308. its missing the rear sight so i haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. i'm still trying to decide what to do with it. if i can find the same type of rear sight it had i may just put it back to the way golden state built it. or i may go hog wild with a new stock from great american, a banded two leaf rear sight, a butterknife bolt handle, double set triggers & a shotgun style triggerguard.
