Is it possible to modify a .308 Saiga to use FAL or M14 magazines?
I just kinda had this brainblast in the middle of the night and was wondering if it were possible.
On a side note, does the .308 Saiga shoot 7.62 NATO as well?

yes it does shoot the nato, and I dont see how you could mod a saiga, since it has the action of an ak, to take those mags, without a lot of work.

Krebs used to convert 308 VEPRS to take M1A mags but I never heard of anyone doing it sucessfully with a Saiga. Two companies make full capacity mags for the Saiga anyway. FBMG is one but I can't remember the other one.

My chief concern was availability of the magazines, and the fact that I just want a metal mag for the Saiga.

It IS possible to convert an M1A magazine to fit the Saiga 308.

I have directions and pictures saved somewhere on my computer.

However, you need to have a fairly decent understanding of the feed mechanism, and some skill in metal working to do it right.

All in all, it isn't worth it with Surefire and FBMG.

The directions I got were from the days when the best you could do was modify a stock 8 round magazine to get a 10 round.

We just got a 20 round mag for the Saiga .308 from FBMG (Fuzzy Bunny Machineguns) in Draper, Utah: (801) 571-1160. As LoadedDrum says; . It's poly, but it appears to be well-made, it loads easily and holds the rounds very secure. Haven't been able to try it yet however. We'll see.

I know poly mags are fine, but I think they're really ugly and kind of make me feel like I'm holding an AirSoft gun, which I hate. I'm sure FBMG has done a fine jub with them, I just hate the way they look.

If you think the poly mags are ugly, don't even bother with mutilated metal ones. By the time folks are done modifying M14 or G3 mags to fit they look like high school metal shop projects. The kind of projects the 'D' students used to make.

The only good way that I can see to do it would be to shave some metal off of the front trunnion, but since that would probably weaken the structure of the locking mechanism I'll let someone else try it first.
