Possible HP 995 Purchase, Need Opinions

Lately I've had an itch for another gun purchase. I happen to stumble upon the Hi Point 995 and I think it would be a fun rifle to have around. I plan to use it as a target shooter and a critter control/medium game rifle. As of now I'm looking at a 995TS with the 4x scope and 15 round mag.

The typical 995 is butt ugly. Because of this I've been looking at the 995TS which I think looks a lot better. I plan on buying new because I haven't seen any used locally.

One of my main concerns is the calibers available in the carbines. I was planning on 9mm but they're offered in 40 and 45 cal also. Is there any benefit to the larger calibers that justify the extra cost? And is ammo any more expensive for either compared to 9mm? I've got a HP C9 so it would be nice to have a common round for the two.

I am also wondering about optics. I planned on the 4x scope. Would this magnify enough to shoot an 8" circle at 100yds? Also, is the rifle able to shoot an okay group at that range? Installing a different scope isn't beyond my ability if 4x isn't enough. My vision isn't the greatest so I prefer a scope over open sights. Would using a scope throw any hope of shooting in the dark out the window even with a strong flash light? Being a critter gun I'm sure it may need to be used at night.

I know a lot of people look down on Hi Point but from what I've been reading the 995 has pretty well proven to be reliable and fairly accurate. Even better is the price and Hi Points warranty. I have a C9 as well and don't have any complaints with it other than I just don't really like hand guns. I don't think this rifle can be beat for only being 275.00 brand new.

hi,the 995 is a super weapon not to mention the warranty!9mm will be way cheaper than the 45acp but if your gonna use it every now and then >get the 45acp.i have the 9mm which all i ever shoot is my reloads out of and every now and then factory ammo.i use my 9mm for home protection,plinking,and varmints.(classic 995)im not into it for the looks.the break in is about 500 rounds(mine was) and by then you will either love it or hate it.as soon as i can ill get the 45 acp for HD and keep the other for playing at the range hope this opinion i have helps thanks

I have a 995ts. I have only put about 500 rounds through it but I have had 0 problems with it. It is fairly accurate, cheap to feed and a lot of fun.

If I were in the market for a Hipoint, I would buy a cheap used one since they have a lifetime warrenty no matter who bought it first, second, third, ect...

If it doesn't work they will fix it or replace it, so long as you didn't monkey it up with a hammer or hacksaw, and sometimes even then they will fix it.

I had one come through the shop where a guy cut off the front sight on an older model. I sent it in and the company actually put on a new model stock and replaced the front sight for free.

I wouldn't scope a pistol caliber rifle myself, since the drop is so significant at 100 yards, expecially for a .45acp. A quality red dot on the other hand is a good way to go.

I usually shoot my ATI-mounted 995 at 50 yards, with a Red Dot. At that range I get 1"-2" groups. With good ammo I have gotten under 8" groups at 100' with open sights. My best accuracy has been with standard and +P 147 grainers.

The HP 995ts is an excellent weapon, limited primarily by the 10-rd magazine cap. You can obtain 15-rd mags from Pro-mag, but there is some controversy about those voiding the warranty or some such thing.

I've owned a 995ts since March of 2010, and it has not faltered after ~2500 rounds. The trigger is... mushy to say the least, but with some practice I managed to coax some good groups. My carbine currently wears a Tru-glo red dot (cheap, I know, but it's stood up for over a year), and stays close in the house and often serves as my truck gun.

As far as 9 vs 40 vs 45, you'll end up paying anywhere from 30 to 100% more for the average FMJ load depending on your area's pricing. I think 40 and 45 will both pack a fair bit more punch out of the carbine than 9 will (especially if you're a reloader!), but 9 is the most economical option and not a bad choice whatsoever.
