permanently. I see now that .22WMR is about 0.019-0.020 larger in O.D. than .22LR so am guessing it is impossible. .22LR would swell and fracture and probably 'blow up' in a .22WMR chamber, right?
Only way is to change the barrel and magazine.
The Mag uses a different bullet diameter too. Everything about the case is bigger. Cost less to buy another rifle.
If you have machinist skills, you can modify a 22 WMR case to act as a semi permanent sleeve in 22 WMR chamber and then shoot 22 Long Rifle.
We have a 22 WMR over 20 gauge break open single shot in my family that's been handed down a couple generations now. We've been shooting 22 LR for about the last 30 years through the 22 WMR barrel.
I just noticed chicharrones post on the adapter. That would be the way to go now adays. $20 for a blued adapter and $28 for a SS adapter. No machinist skills needed.
This. For $300-500, a guy can buy a VERY nice 22LR. Off-sell that WMR and put the money towards the LR.
If you insist on doing the modification, then a guy has to have quite a bit of know how. It's easier to go from WMR to LR, since the bore dia are on the right side of "wrong size." Going WMR to 22LR leaves you with a bore too small. Feeding, extraction, and ejection are real problems. They're all relatively simple to fix, but they're also all relatively expensive to fix, when you can buy a new 22LR for cheaper than setting back and rechambering the WMR barrel.
Besides the above mentioned problems. .22Mag barrel is .224 like a center fire. .22LR is generally .223/.222. It will effect accuracy. Not worth it. Sell the Mag and buy a LR.
