possible Winchester SX-1 purchase

I know these things have a cult following.... and that there were several series. A guy I work with, a handgunner has one he is considering selling. All I know right now is its an sx-1 and has a problem with a nylon/polymer recoil buffer. Forgive my youth and inexperience, but Ihave never handled an sx-1. I also know there are smiths who tune these things specifically. What do I need to know to make a smart decision or are all sx-1's worth buying?
